Found a Hypertech chip in my junkyard PCM!

So, I can't believe I didn't ever pay attention to this. I've got a BJYL PCM TBI out of a '94 C1500 in my '77 Cherokee now. When I installed the Moates stuff I removed what I thought was the factory chipset. Well, it reads 'Hypertech' on it. I always assumed that was Chevy's chip supplier or something. Apparently I was incorrect. I've emailed Hypertech just now asking for some background on this thing because the truck runs really well with it in. Better, easily, than the stock BJYL $OD program.

Read the hypertech chip then compare it to a stock chip. You'll be surprised how little is done for the big bucks... I've got about 40 aftermarket chips I've collected from JY ECMs and tune jobs and not one was worth 1/4 what they charge.

Hypertech chips usually have very little changed, although I have noticed on another application that the engine attached with the Hypertech chip installed started and ran easier, but lost power on the top end over the stock chip.

Wow, Mark, you're right (duh!). I'm comparing my mildly modified stock tune (flags turned off and such) to the Hypertech and can't hardly find any difference. There's a touch difference in the VE tables, but not much. Timing appears to be stock.

The one I looked at had wot fuel and spark changes and the ads superchip had delayed tcc lockup.

I found a hypertech chip in a pcm and some other one (jet?) in another. I was surprised at just how little was changed. I sold them on ebay after reading the chips. I still have the bins somewhere on my laptop. One was for a tbi 4.3 V6 in a 7427 pcm($0D), the other was for a 5.7 tpi in a 7730 ecm ($8D).

hypertech chips may be overpriced, but they do what they advertise within the limits of what they can do, since they can't tailor to a customer's individual car.

just because a test vehicle in good condition takes 5 more degrees of WOT timing happily and is 20% rich from the factory at 6k rpm, doesnt mean joe's bagged out 1986 iroc with 250,000 miles, a weak fuel pump, coked up cylinders, and clogged cats will play nice with those numbers.

that kind of person is a large part of their target market, and it's also why the factory tunes are a bit conservative to begin with.... gm would rather be far from the limit than risk the liability of blowing up some guys shitbox; and that's how hypertech feels as well.

if someone handed me the parameters of how many different vehicles these hypertech chips need to work on, and what would happen if we push too hard.. then asked me to design one, i bet my results would be equally dissapointing. and so would yours.
