Looking for an old eprom programmer that will work on 2732 2732a chips? Whos using this old technoligy? Is there any chips still available new?
I found a data sheet for ST chips M2732a but the GM ECM used a AMD AM 2732a-2dc chip?Trying to see what times to UV erase and what voltages to program them at.
I still have a few OEM chips from 1227747 AM2732a-2dc chips... but years ago it was a crap shhot if I got one right?
The Willems GQ-3X will read and program the 2732(A) PROMs.

I keep mine on my bench, but haven't used it in months. I use the BURN2 most often, since I'm usually programming SST27SF512 EEPROMS.
The nice thing about the Willems GQ-3X is that it is a true USB programmer, and has software selecet for the type of PROM being programmed. This is a huge change from the Willems Dual Power programmer, that used USB for power only and LPT for coms, along with needing to set the switches in the correct position for the PROM being read or programmed.
I've only read about the old willem and really not interested although it's very cheap.
I had a Pocket Programmer years ago and it was hit or miss if you got voltage correct for burn. I still have a UV eraser, don't know what I did with the Pocket Programmer?
Wish the AutoProm did stock chips...
The new USB model you listed I was looking at. Does it do the stock 2732a 7747 chips OK? Says it's automatic? Or do you select voltage to burn chip? Next I guess is to find some new chips? Never had luck with them before, had better luck with stock chips UV erased, still have a bunch erased...
The list shows 2732 and 2732A. Though when I click on it in my software, it says that an external power supply might be needed. All chip selections and set-up are software based on the GQ-3X, no more jumpers or switches to set. You can download the software for the GQ-3X to check out that side of it. I bought mine and other parts through mcumall.com.
I've never programmed a 2732(A), only read them.
Why do you want to program the 2732(A)? Why not just use an SST27SF512 with an adapter?
2732a seems to have three voltages listed 12.5V 21V and 25V maybe that's why I never had much luck? Seems like one out of three back then would work. But others have had 100% sucsess rate and UV erased chips and burned a few times each...
So I guess I have to figure out exact UV erase times, and exact program voltages...

No, the name comes from a play on a 6 cylinder engine. I play with 6 cylinder engines most often, so it's what I went to from a previous name.
I got a email into them on the GQ 4X to see if it needs more than USB for power. I don't think USB could supply 21v and 25v but maybe through the programmer? Or it will need an AC power supply.
I'm still using my PP2 which is an old enough version it won't work with winnows. 2732's program ok on that one. If there's any question as to programming voltage I start with the lowest voltage and work up from there. The only problem I've had programming is with OEM GM chips which use non standard programming voltage. Somewhere in the gmecm archives is a post from Ludis with details on that.
It took a while to realize how sensitive the old technology is to static electricity. I lost quite a few chips that way. You can also kill a chip by overexposing them to the UV eraser. I have my eraser timer set low enough so it doesn't usually erase a 27256 in one shot, but it will reset a 2732.
So you think thos ST chips are better than stock chevy?
Seems I can find IC 2732a and ST 2732a even the -2dt on ends of them.
Or do you know of a good place to buy a bunch of chips?
Someone now tells me a 27c32 chip can be used as a replacment?
I thought I was done doing old chips... :sad:
Maybe today there is a replacement that does not need UV light?
EDIT: Just looked at an old SuperChip and it is a ST M2732aFI 21 volt Fast still UV erased...
I think any chip you have specs for is likely to live better than one you're guessing about. I have a 7747 here which I've re-socketed for a 27C128.
Here's a few bits I gathered from gmecm:

"industrial" temperature grade parts, then try to get CMOS chips - in
other words, the 27C* versions. As for speed, 250 ns is plenty good

Back in the day the info on the board was to avoid AMD chips for the 2732 as they'd die more often. I used to buy my used chips from a place called Astro electronics (how's that for memory!) and IIRC they were in Florida. They sold "pulls" which were used chips. I think this is the place:

There's also Mentor Electronics and Mendelsen's, both in OH. Note that it's been many, many years since anyone I know has ordered 2732s. If you're in dire straits I have a couple of spares.
Right now I need 30 to update a fleet of trucks for a HVAC company that have had drivability issues since new. Their chip is in my SnapOn book as recalled for drivabilty issues!!!
With your info (Thanks!) I think I will check data sheet on the ST chips that are new, came with SuperChips and just checked a Hyperchip the same and just checked a newer 427 Jet chip same! These are available new in lots of 50 reasonable.
Unless somone talks me out of the GQ-4x I think I will get it...
This thread may still be of help to others so thanks everyone, don't stop if you have information. Some guys could still want to do this the old way and with a new USB chip burner for $99. shipped that will do old and new chips it may be the way.

Out here in rust country most trucks old enough to run the 2732 are long gone. There are (28) 2732A's in tubes within my reach. In the cabinet behind me are boxes of "pulls" so there are maybe 10 or so more there. If you don't have luck finding some, send a note. With 10 extra chips you can get started trying to reburn the factory GM chips and have a few spares for ones that die during the learning process.
I found some brand new m2732a ST chips for $3.50 a piece on ebay, I got ten to start, if they are reliable I'll buy a 50 lot for $2.80 a piece.
But after what you told me I wanted to get something more reliable than stock GM ones... but thanks for the offer! :happy:

Suposedly same as GQ 3x true USB but in a case, not just and exposed board. GQ3x is updated old Willem programmer, there are so many in between then china knock offs. But the latest 3x is only USB. Some are combination USB and printer port. Also newest GQ 4x and 3X are compliant up to and including windows 7. For $100. shipped looks like a good deal. Not having to fire up my old desktop with windows XP and a printer port? Priceless! :tounge:
Looked into Pocket Programmer 2 now USB but very expensive and so many people complain that customer support is ridiculas, even can't get full refund on defective NEW programmers? so I passed on that. My old one worked well. Wish I knew who I leant it too... :mad1:

It's been a great programmer. The only reason I use a BURN2 now, is because Craig sent me one, and it fits in my tuning bag a little nicer than my GQ-3X. So now my GQ-3X stays on the computer desk, just in case.
Would be a good unit for desktop! But all my stuff travels quite a bit to make engine swaps run etc..., so I have it all in computor bags and one suitcase with handle and wheels. So I went for the cased version of the 3x! :laugh:
THose chips I ordered are for the data sheet posted above so I have correct voltage, but looked and it stamped right on the chip. 21 volt! :happy:
Tried my UV eraser at 10 minutes and got a blank GM chip...
Wonder if you could make an AutoProm Emulation cable work with 24 pins?
Yeah, you can use an AutoProm in a '7747. I believe there is a switch setting for that.
I don't think the AutoProm needs the Socket Booster, like an Ostrich 2.0 does.
Looking at THIS PAGE it would indicate to me that the AutoProm does not need the Socket Booster.
No it doesn't need a socket booster! But I have one just in case because I have a long ribbon cord to. Long ribbon works fine, no booster on 7747 with 28 pin socket.
So how would you set up to connect to 24 pin socket?
If anyone wanted to sell a bunch of chip holders I'd be interested? PM me!
