Just out of curosity, what was updated/upgraged? Will it interchange with a 7727? Run the same masks/bins as the older ones?

has the 2K of SRAM that the other similar ECMs didn't get.
otherwise, unless you opened it up and looked inside, you would never know that it wasn't a 7727.
dyeager, I can't really say I had problems with the stock o2 because I didn't ever try to use it. When I put this engine in with the long tubes I never installed a nbo2 at all. I tune in open loop and it runs great so I left it at that. Really just a little lazy on my part.
When I can start buying bigger ticket items again, I plan to get stainless exhaust, headers and all...so I'm going to have to re-do my O2 setup at that time anyway. Will require welding a new bung (or two if I want both sides, unless I install it half the rig back where the pipes merge) Hate to do so, will void the warranty I'm sure, but as I look at it with stainless, what exactly is going to happen to require warranty? While I won't be able to put the O2 in the stock location, I can certainly move it forward a couple of feet and still get all four cylinders.
I really hate the situation I've put myself in...I should really focus on getting the frame done, then body swap, THEN worry about the '7727 conversion, but I keep needing the truck when I don't expect to. The body swap is going to have it down for some time so I don't want to get started on that until I'm certain I have EVERYTHING ready, which will still be some time I'm sure. Unfortunately it isn't a lot of fun driving it the way it runs now.
Doesn't help that my mind likes to bounce around between projects and come up with new ideas...like the Gentex mirror I want to swap in, the backup sensor system I have to install, etc. I've got less time to work on things than I do to think about them/come up with new projects, and that's always a bad combination for me. :)
I don't *think* so...I remember seeing a post on Coloradok5 a long time back about these mirrors, didn't realize how cool they are until recently when I dug into it more, and realized they are essentially "self contained" units. I originally figured they had a separate circuit board somewhere else. Dad found/got one at a wrecking yard recently that was the compass/temp only units (which is all I want) so other than the temp probe and windshield piece I need to find, I've got all I need to run it.
With just wiring to the plug, the temp probe, and using the later piece that is glued to the windshield to mount it, it's going to be one of the easier swaps I've done! Thrown into my bin of "future mods" to be completed before I die lol.
yeah, they generally are pretty nice (and reliable) mirrors. the donnellys tend to fail by the mirror basically eroding away starting at the edges.
Is that who made the earlier mirrors for GM, or is that another "electronic" mirror?
I've noticed that on my old mirrors (80's) in my truck and Cutlass...the edges of the mirror start to turn black, like the silver reflective surface is delaminating or something.
i don't know if it's an early/late thing, but the Gentex seem to fail less often. i have a donnelly that lasted from 1995 to ~2007 before it started to delaminate. no displays, but it does have a pair of map lights on it.
How long have they been making them? You have a '95, so it's been quite some time! I would have liked map lights, but not necessary. If I find one that has those with just compass/temp, I can always swap later. :)
from what i can tell, they were both being used at the same time by GM.... not sure if they were split by divisions or assembly plants or ???
Yall talking about those rear view mirrors that have the compass and temp display in the corner?
Yep. Mines a Gentex 177. Data is cast on the back of the housing. Not sure what all else they can have, but I know later can have onstar buttons, and I believe map lights. Have to be careful, depending on what you want, some are compass only. Pretty obvious if taking from a wrecking yard vehicle. Also has the auto-dimming feature.
The "button" on the windshield changed shape, really the only modification needed to the vehicle to run it, short of the wiring itself, which is minimal.
Tons of these things in the wrecking yards thankfully. You can also check ebay, but for the most part, they are more pricey than the wrecking yards by a fair bit, at least around here.
Interesting. So they are pretty much self contained other than adding power/ground and a temperature probe? Sounds like a neat upgrade for a older vehicle. Havent seen anything new enough at my local pull a part to have one, but I am going to start keeping my eye open.
What would you use for a temp probe, where is the stock one in vehicles that came with them?
Dont mean to hijack your thread with these questions.
knowing GM, i can almost guarantee that the exterior temp sensors use the same temp sensing element as a coolant temp and air charge temp sensor.
so, in theory, you could probably use either of those, with varying levels of how quickly they react to temperature differences.
