First Logged Data 454 TBI

​​​I had a little spare time this weekend, so I decided to log some data on a truck that doesn't run like it should.

Truck: 1987 V30 TBI 454/TH400 (1227747 ECM, ACLP) no knock sensor.
At some point someone added headers, Edlelbrock aluminium TBI intake manifold and open element air cleaner. Otherwise all original.

I did not check the fuel pressure, timing or any other items. This was just to get the hang of logging data in general and WinALDL. I know some here do not like WinALDL, but this is a new arena for me. I plan on trying other software later.

Attached is the BLM and LOG data in two excel worksheets (.xlsx). How does this look?

Just took a quick look, but it looks like your knock count is a problem. You may be having a knock retard problem, someone with a lot more experience with diagnostics should show up soon.

It's not that we don't like WinALDL, just new and better tools have come around many years ago that work so much better.

ACLP was superceeded 4 times to a final BCC of AZFT.

Your log shows open loop idle. Always adding fuel, always having knock counts. But that truck may never have had a knock sensor...

I thought someone was joking with me! Darn near exactly what we were/are dealing with! Same components short of the TH400 and open element.

No knock sensor, stock.

Just from what we figured out on the one I've dealt with, fuel pressure needed to come up, but I never measured it before/after. Roughly 20% off on VE just from those changes and a "computer friendly" (read: BS) cam. You have autozones or similar back there? They will loan you a fuel pressure tester.

A little more information about the truck. This truck never had a knock sensor from GM. The ECM connector pin B7 is vacant. Not sure why it has knock counts in the log. To my knowledge, no other changes other than those listed above, have been made to the engine

I also noticed the open loop at idle. Is this normal for this BIN?

Yes, we do have Autozone stores here. I'll see if they have the fuel pressure adapter for TBI.

IIRC with no knock sensor hooked up the knock counts just keep going.

Very common for Big Block bins to be open loop idle.

The adapter for TBI fuel pressure goes in at fuel filter, good time to change it as it will be half off.

They will have a pressure tester "kit", just so you don't ask for the wrong thing. :)

I'm leaning toward a fuel pressure adapter that goes into the rear of the TBI so I can run the gauge up to the windshield to watch pressure during driving.

Would it be advantageous to install the AZFT BIN ?

Yes, start with AZFT, there are obvious big improvements to spark and VE tables among other things. Out of the box it's a better running engine.

That's a good choice for fuel pressure adapter, here's what my temp gauge looks like.

The fuel pressure adapter can sometimes be found local at NAPA, part # 2-18421. It is a service part to their fuel injection test kit , some may need to order it in from their D/C , some may have it in stock.
