Which Mefi? Mefi1,2,3,3b,4,4a,4b,5,5a,5b,5c,6,7 etc etc????? Mefi1,2 can't do real-time tuning and have to flash. The rest can be tuned in real-time while engine is running

MEFI 5. I'm only interested in doing one boat for a friend. I was hoping not have to spend the big cash on the software. (I know... B.O.A.T. means "bust out another thousand"). I have TunerPro, Efilive, TunerCat OBD 1 & 2 with a RoadRunner, Moates stuff and several others. I don't really need another.

I'm sending up a flare. I have purchased both the MEFI 1-4 Scan and tune software and the MEFI 5 software. The latest MEFI software on the the thumb drive does notwork and does not have install instructions. I get an 8200 error dealing with the com port selection.
I have been going around and around with Ken and Bob from OBD Diagnostics. Ken sent me a link to a new software fix, it still doesn't work. Does anyone have an older version of the software instructions, or any knowledge how to designate the com port. Any help would be appreciated.

MEFI 5 Burn Instructions
This package includes a MEFI5 Scan Box, a registration key, a USB cable, a vehicle interface cable, a
CD ROM with drivers and engine software, and this instruction sheet. This cable is intended to be used
with engines using GM MEFI 5 ECM’s. For more detailed information on any aspect of this cable, you
can read information from our website at www.mefiburn.com
Quick Installation Instructions
1. With the USB Cable and electronics box NOT plugged in, boot your PC and insert the
provided CD-ROM
2. Navigate to the CD folder. Double-click on the file named MEFI5Burn-setup. This will
install the software and the USB driver.
3. Plug in the USB cable and electronics box and allow Windows to find the hardware. Open your
Windows System Control Panel and choose the Hardware Device Manager. Expand the Ports
(COM & LPT) item and look at the Properties for the USB Serial port and note which COM port
has been assigned to the cable. You will need to tell the software which COM port is being used
by the MEFI 5 Burn system.
4. Occasionally the COM port does not show up in Device Manager. If this is the case, scroll down
and expand the section titled Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Double-click on the item USB
Serial Converter, click on the Advanced tab. Make sure the checkbox Load VCP is checked then
click OK. Unplug the cable for a few seconds then plug it back in. The driver software should find
new hardware and install the USB Serial Port as described above.
5. Launch the MEFI5Burn application then go to the Help menu and select Enter Registration Key.
Type in the registration key that is printed on the the card, taking care to differentiate between 0
(a number) and O (a letter).
6. Plug the vehicle interface cable into the electronics box and the other end into the diagnostic port
on your vehicle making sure the ignition key is on (with the dash illuminated). You are now ready
to collect data.
Monitoring Your Engine
a. Launch MEFI5Burn and verify that the
COM port you are using is the one that the USB
cable is installed on, set this under the File ->
Preferences menu.
b. Make sure the MEFI Scan & Tune cable is
plugged in to your USB port and to the
diagnostic connector on your engine. Make sure
the ignition switch is "Key Forward" or the
engine is running.
c. Click the Scan button to bring up the
scanner, then click green Scan button to start
the scanning process. You can view the data on
either the Dashboard or the Items List.
d. Log your engine's performance by clicking
the round Recording red button in the top menu.
When you want to stop recording, click the
square stop button and save the log file with a
unique name. You can later play back the
logged data to review the engine performance,
using the slider to speed forward and backward
if desired.
Reading your current Tune
a. Make sure the MEFI Scan & Tune cable is
plugged in to your USB port and to the
diagnostic connector on your engine. Make sure
the ignition switch is "Key Forward" (on but not
running)
b. Launch MEF5Iburn.
c. Click on "Read"
d. Verify that the proper COM Port that the
cable has installed on is selected and the proper
MEFI type is selected. Click on the buttons for
COM Port or MEFI Type to change the settings.
e. Browse to select the location on your hard
drive where you want to save your downloaded
bin from the MEFI controller and input the name
of the file you will use to save the controllers
binary program file. The file name should end
in .bin, such as COPO-Test31.bin
f. Click "Download Now" to save the program
to your PC. If you encounter a password locked
controller, see below.
g. Exit MEF5Iburn
Modifying your Tune
a. Make a backup copy of your existing tune
file. This is Important! You will then always have
your base tune to go back to, and compare to.
b. Launch TunerPro
b. Select the MEFI5 XDF definition file for your
controller type under the XDF menu. The XDF
file should be in the Documents\TunerPro\Bin
Definitions folder.
c. Select Open Bin from under the File menu.
Open the bin file you just downloaded using the
MEFI5burn program.
d. Edit any parameters you want to change. If
all the parameters appear invalid, make sure
you did a download for the correct version of the
MEFI. For editing and tuning tips, see below.
e. Save your edited bin file. You can use Save
Bin As... to save it under a new name each time
as you make modifications to keep track of your
revision history.
f. Exit TunerPro
Writing your Tune
a. Make sure the MEFI Scan & Tune cable is
plugged in to your USB port and to the
diagnostic connector on your engine. Make sure
the ignition switch is "Key Forward" (on but not
running)
b. Launch MEFI5burn
c. Click on "Write"
d. Verify that the proper COM Port is selected
and the proper MEFI type is selected. Click on
the buttons for COM Port or MEFI Type to
change the settings.
e. Browse to select the bin file you will use to
program the controller.
f. Click "Write Now" to write the program to
your controller. Make sure you are uploading a
valid file to the controller, the upload overwrites
whatever calibration was in the controller. After
the upload is complete, key off the ignition for a
few seconds to permanently write the program
into the controllers memory, then key back on.
g. Exit MEFI5burn after you are done.

Here are the two errors when using the program. Does anyone have a working version of the executable that you can share?
:mad1:

with the cable plugged into a usb port
run-time error '8002':
invalid port number

without the cable plugged in and running a com port test
run-time error '5'
invalid procedure call or argument

*UPDATE* Turned out to be a bad box. Ken shipped a replacement air mail. They stand behind their product.
