borrowing the concept from W-Body.com, since it has been INCREDIBLY successful there, with the original thread reaching 149,993 posts(page number 10,000) from 5-4-2005 to 4-7-2010, we since have made a V2 of the thread and from 4-7-2010 to current, we're up to 29,074 posts...

essentially, this thread can be used for nearly anything: venting about your day, posting a pic of something interesting you saw, jokes, etc...

because sometimes, a forum needs to not be so incredibly specific about who or what it caters to.

also: unless Mark says otherwise, anything that could be considered NSFW? don't post it directly, if at all. be CERTAIN to clearly label it as such.

have fun!

I LOVE Futurama.... i don't watch much TV at all, but that is something i rarely miss.

What's NSFW?

I am an open kinf of guy and like discussion on many things. EFI is my favorite and on another site I started with a guy 10 years ago he would have a bloddy fit if someone interfered or asked a question or shown him another way. So here I am with a gtreat group. If you want to do something then go for it.

My only concerns is we keep this gentemenly, some call that PG13 nowadays.

EagleMark
04-12-2011, 05:08 AM
I also do not watch mutch TV but I do record PowerBlock every saturday morning so when I want to set down and let my mind relaxt they entertain me!

EDIT: OK there's also Gears, some Speedvision, paris tom Dakar or wherever they go know and Top Gear.

RobertISaar
04-12-2011, 06:47 AM
NSFW = not safe for work. PG13 is a good/similar description, i think.

BTW, the movie Idiocracy? GREAT film.... scary though, since i know people who wouldn't have much trouble fitting into the society of 2505...

my math feels good today:

A*B*C*D*E*F*G=H

a=BPW in mS
b=(1/3,600,000)
c=injector flowrate in lb/hr
d=(# of cylinders / 2)
e=RPM
f=60
g=injector pulses per 4 stroke cycle

h=lb/hr of fuel flowing through injectors.

A/B=C

a=lb/hr of fuel flowing through injectors
b=6.073 (lbs of gasoline per gallon)

c=gallons/hr of fuel flowing through injectors

A/B=C

a=MPH
b=gal/hr

c= Miles per gallon (derived from miles per hour and gallons per hour)

Man you so far ahead of me in math! I don't even know what * means?

RobertISaar
04-14-2011, 10:13 PM
* = multiply.

BTW, that equation should work with nearly any MPFI/SFI motor, so long as it's not a 2 stroke. it would need modified slightly for any engine that has more or less injectors than it does cylinders.

I just, for the first time ever, spent 3 digits on fuel in one vehicle. It cost me $102.50 to fill the Dakota.

So I'm going to modify the exhaust, which I'm told helps, probably switch it to manual, and likely MS3 it or put a Delco ECM on it.

So....

Lack of posts over the last week is eerie...
I think everybody got hit with life!

Man I have had a terrable week, my doctor starting acting like a lawyer when I asked him some questions of his plan of action.
:confused1:

The Mobile home park I have lived in for 12 years gave me a 3 day eviction notice for running an automotive repair shop.... since I have a herniated disk in my back I have not even opened the door to the garage in a month, which is 16 by 70 long and I don't have one single part outside, never did. It's a nice place and they would not allow it. But I have written permission to work on my own vehicles inside. Made sure that was clear before I bought the place and built the garage along side the house. We got a new manager awhile back, couple years and I never even saw her or said hi. Just pay the rent and enjoy my home! WHAM!!!! She sure bitch slapped me...
:confused1:
SoI had a doctors appointment the next day and asked my doctor if he could handle this as he is now acting like a lawyer? He discharged me from his office! WHAM! Another bitch slap...
:confused1:

so luckily I have an old freind who is an attorney and he wrote the park manager a letter... the owner of the park came to my house and apoligized for her RUDE behavior and thanked me for being a good neighbor...

Then the assisted living place calls and wants to know when my mom is coming back????
:confused1:

When did she leave I asked and they told me about three days ago as far as they can tell and thought she was here visiting me.....
:confused1:

So anyway we found her at her freinds house DRUNK and not taking her medication for dementia and alshiemers the whole time gone and she and her freinds apartment was a wreak..... WHAM! Apartment manger gave her freind a three day eviction notice and she wanted to know if she could stay with me!!!
:confused1:

Needless to say she is not here and I don't know where she is and don't care. But my mother is coming back to reality in her new room in the assited living LOCKED security wing....

Now that I have had one day without any disasters UPS shows up with all the nice new shiny parts to rebuild my sons 345 IH motor in his tow rig for his rock crawler and I can go back to having a life. I hope!

The reason the Rapture didn't happen:

The reason judgement day did not happen was because it was presented by a false prophet. Anyone who has had any bible reading would be able to argue that guy into a sewer hole. My ten year old neice knew enough to quote why she was not worried about the false coming of Jesus.
Even the koran can show this was a false prophet proclaiming a false date.

I can't beleive it even made the news...

So with all the time at home I'm getting a few things done but bored and found all my music on the computer.

Broad spectrum of people here but I'll ask.... what music do you like? What bands?

I have gotten older and have started liking even country as forced on me by my son. But before that old favorites are of course the best band in the history of Rock and Roll (NOT RICK ROLLED  ) Led Zeplin, Pink Floyd. Newer stuff Enigma, Evenscence. Solos Lenny Kravitz...

One song by Mindy Smith "come to Jesus" really hits the spot.

i'm a big fan of industrial rock and concept albums, but for the most part, i listen to almost everything my father does. probably not a coincidence.

quick list would be:

NIN
the smashing pumpkins
queensryche
zepplin
pink floyd
metallica(although ever since St Anger was poo'd out, i can't bring myself to like anything)
megadeth
bush
queen
rage against the machine
rammstein
tool
and recently, i started liking Daft Punk due to their work on the Tron:legacy soundtrack.

those would be the ones that i associate myself with the most.

So is Lime Wire still the go to place?

RobertISaar
06-13-2011, 03:15 AM
limewire is full of viruses and people looking to fine you thousands of dollars for the equivalent of a $15 CD.

torrents are the way to go these days.

EagleMark
06-13-2011, 04:10 AM
Information on torrents to a torrent naive person please! I need more tunes!

I have never thought of it as theft because if I did not get the music for free, I would never buy the album... opps do they still make them? I meant CD. As a matter of facts I still have about 100 cassetes, last one I bought before I was married 25 years ago. I have never bought a CD for music. I listen to music on the radio for free or what I get of internet for free.

EDIT: Well I guess I have stolen music... when my kids freinds come over with CDs I say, "Can I listen to that for a little bit?" and I quickly copy it... or I did a few years ago. Can you still copy music CDs? I know movie DVDs don't anymore...

RobertISaar
06-13-2011, 04:20 AM
quick explanation of torrents(though wikipedia may have a much more thorough explanation):

VERY similar to the classic P2P stuff like limewire, except with MUCH better security. essentially, you'll need a torrent program(i use the normal bittorrent.com one), then you'll need to find some torrent files for whatever your looking for. i constantly use thepiratebay.org or sometimes demonoid.me

then search for whatever you might want, or check the "top 100" sections, find something you like, make sure it has "seeders"(people who have at least one full copy of the entire torrent), check the comments to see how people have been liking it, though there may be people who have no idea what they're talking about, so take it with a grain of salt.

if you like what you see, download/open the .torrent file, and then your bittorrent client should start downloading all of the files described in the torrent.

also, copying CDs/DVDs is as easy as it's ever been.

Six_Shooter
06-13-2011, 04:43 AM
LMAO... Lime wire....

NEVER use a P2P program, they are full of viruses. Not saying all files are infected, but many are.

I listen to a lot of different genres.

(new) Country, like Brad Paisely (Puts on a great concert), Faith Hill, Toby Keith, Taylor Swift, Lady Antebelum, Darius Rucker, etc.
Metal, like Metallica (Pre "Re-Load"), Megadeth, Guns 'N' Roses, Ozzy, Ramstein, etc.
House/Electronic, like Deadmau5, D-devils, Becky, Lucky Princess, etc.
Classical, like Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, etc.
Musicals, like Phantom of the Opera, Mama Mia.
Rock, like AC/DC, Led Zepplin, Queen, Pink Floyd, ZZ Top, etc.
Dance/Hip Hop, mostly older stuff from the early to mid '90s.
Anything else that catches my ear, like William Shatner, Organized Rhyme, etc.
Basically anything but Gangster Rap, and old time whiny country.

EagleMark
06-13-2011, 05:14 AM

Six_Shooter

Yep, well.... not really singing, but spoken word. He has two albums out, his first album The Transformed Man was released in 1968. I don't have that one, but I do like his rendition of Rocket Man from that album. I do have his second album, Has Been which has a rendition of Common People and a few guest stars, like Henry Rollins in the song I Can't Get Behind That. It looks like he has a third album coming out this year. :D

Well we're not sure, I think what happened was the lift charge may have fractured the cardboard sphere holding the display charge and caused it to ignite early. That 8" shell should have displayed at about 800 feet. It was a little bit of excitement. It's always fun though.

We were on a freinds boat on Lake Coeur d'Alene for the forth about 6 years ago. Torwards the final finally something went wrong? I don't know how many people noticed but we had achored there early and were as close as possible. Don't think I will do that again. Only way to describe is a bad LAD trip that wasn't going to stop. They just kept getting closer and something failed but the last few big booms with huge sparks, several hit the water and I was looking for cover. and there was none. it was an open 20 foot boat.

I think only 100 people in that area we were in would have noticed and when they stopped we heard several women screaming in the area. Not happy screams.

Fianlly ended and we lived. Then several hundred boats (probably thousands) started up and took off. 20 foot open boat again, not good. We got swamped once and I stood next to Larry our Captain and was truely concered... he was only taking a couple of my directions before I told him I'll Drive. Imediatlu floore it through same huge wakes from a yoo yoo in a 40 foot boat who decided to go a slow speed which was making the biggest wake possible. and got it op plane with a couple 90 degree slow turns and full throttle took about 15 seconds and didn't intrude on anyone. Then stayed with a pack of boats all straight and on plane at same speed and all good captains and made it back to other end of the lake at night, pitch dark. I knew eactly where we were at all times and am capable of not only driving the lake in the dark but fish it too! I had no idea Larry did not know what he was doing.

Other than that yeah we had fun. Haven't left the house on forth of July Weekend since...

29 He gives strength to the weary

30 Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
31 but those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.

Thomas Jefferson

I grew up in NJ where the right to bear arms means you can wear a slevless shirt!
So the only few guns I had were illeagal small pocket guns for protection, never fired. When I left NJ at 21 with a cab over camper for a year road trip I was only gone 2 weeks and knew I was never going home. Found that in the rest of the country you could own guns, buy guns, shoot guns and some states like my favorite AZ wear a sidearm in full view. Legally!

2 of my three small pocket guns from NJ: One was an auto and fired once and jambed everytime. Had a gunsmith fix it. One was a revolver that jammed on first bullet then fire, then jam then fire... Had a shop smith fix it. Glad I never needed them!

I cant win from losing.
I bought that grand cherokee (read thread good deal is not so good) with the PO telling me the engine is the only problem.
I spend $400 fixing the engine, only to test drive it and find out the trans wont shift and is making a whining noise.
I spend another $400 putting in a good used trans, and now it shifts and works just fine (for now:rolleye:) only to find out the whining noise is the rear axle. :mad1:
Other things I have found wrong:
Heater blower motor doesnt work, there is a module that controlls it, and its anywhere from $100-150.
The blower motor modules usally go out because the blower motors get age and wear on them and start pulling too many amps. And the new blower motors are around $60-70.
The hot/cold blend doors in the hvac system do not work. Research online shows its a weak factory design. It can be fixed by removing the glovebox and cutting a hole in the hvac box, removing the doors and replaceing them with new aftermarket ones.
I pull the glove box to take a peek, only to find out someone has already been in there ****** rigging the doors, and left ta big hole in the box with nothing but tape covering it.
The list goes on....

Ok, rant over.

If it only works on high then it's a very easy fix. We have a bazillion Chrysler products in the fleet and I have done this many times. They call it a "module" but it's really just a cheap resistor block in ceramic substrate. There's a small bullet shaped piece that's a chemical fuse. They can be replaced but I just install a 25A fuse there and put it back together. In 4-5 years with 8-10 hr per day usage you'll probably find the connector at the resistor block has gotten distorted from the extra heat, or maybe it will be the switch on the dash. Both of those parts together are usually less than the resistor block so it's a good fix all around. And if you can't fix the module and end up buying a new one you can get a big ceramic resistor like the old Chrysler and Jeep ignition resistors and put that in line with the blower motor to limit total current usage and save the extra money you'd spend on the blower. If you have access to air it doesn't hurt if you can remove the motor and blow out all the carbon and dust that accumulated inside the motor housing.

I'm a packrat in the worst way. I dug out my first PC, a P200 stuffed into a 486DX100 case, and it fired up right away. It even had correct date and time, and it hasn't run since '04. I had to remember a few old tricks to get Winnows 98 to talk with my network but overall it was a trouble free startup. The sad part is it's quicker to use and more responsive than my machine that's 5X faster in processor speed with 10X more memory, dual processors, and a heirarchy dedicated to moving data. I _hate_ forced Winnows upgrades. There's sooo much unnecessary junk that gets added to each new version of Gatesware it's ridiculous. I've tried moving to Linux more than once but the world is geared toward Microsoft and the switch is never permanent. Maybe I just need to buy a new machine with the latest version of Winnows and everything will get better.

Still hate the FORCED douments, shared documents, my documents, admin only to change this and that, change user? What user? Me? FUDGE!!! I was so careful at first to be a machine for one person, with no password or switch user crap! yet still sometimes I go to find a file in my documents only to find I am in shared documents and there's nothing there?

No, it doesnt work at all. The switch on the dash, or the controlls, send a 0-5 volt signal to this module to controll the fan speed. When I first noticed it didnt work, I looked under the dash and found the wires had been cut and the module had been bypassed, and then the wires cut again. I tried hooking the module back up and I got a poof of smoke and a blown 40 amp fuseable link under the hood. I replaced the fuse then hooked the wires up straight to the motor just to see if it worked, and the wires (pretty decent sized) started getting warm. So the motor works, its just pulling to many amps. It appears most of the time the connector melts, but mine the whole module went out too.

I have a craftsman top box my mom gave me when I was 17 and it's still in good shape 35 years later... I got a new top of the line roller drawers craftsman bottom and top box about 5 foot tall 26 inch wide, 18 inch deep 13 years ago and still like new, was under $800 back then, just looked and man you could get their biggest bottom box, biggest top box and side box's for the $1100... lots of sales! In red, black or yellow...

If you have to have Snap on and have cash just watch Craig's list... but even used for box alone, could be craftman full of tools for less...

Lowes has a huge Kobalt, stainless steel with stereo and a refrigerator for $1200ish...

Six_Shooter

That Kobalt box around here is about $2000. If it didn't have a fridge I'd probably like it, I want my tool box to be a tool box, not a deli. ;) The radio, while also unnecessary, is kinda neat. I'm pretty sure it would still be tool small though...

I have a LOT of tools...

Currently overflowing 3 24" wide tool boxes, that are both bottom and top chests, one with an additional middle cabinet. Many different tool box makes in there though.

I'm looking at a Mastercraft (Canadian Tire store brand) "Euro" 47" wide tool box top and bottom combo:
Top:http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6/Tools/ToolStorage/MastercraftMechanicsToolChests/PRDOVR~0581009P/Euro+Style+8-Drawer+Chest.jsp?locale=en
Bottom:http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6/Tools/ToolStorage/MastercraftMechanicsToolChests/PRDOVR~0581010P/Euro+Style+10-Drawer+Cabinet.jsp?locale=en
I have rain cheques for the last sale price, which is about half of the price listed.

The other box I'm looking at is the Matco 4s.
This one I would have to make payments on. It's a $7500 or so box, that I can get for about $4500, and in my colour. :D
Top: I can't find a link to the top P/N 4225TC
Bottom:http://www.matcotools.com/catalog/product/4225R-DBC/4S-2BAY-25-ROLLAWAY-DBL-CHM/
(http://www.matcotools.com/catalog/product/4225R-DBC/4S-2BAY-25-ROLLAWAY-DBL-CHM/)The colour would be sublime green, with black trim. You can "build it" on the Matco site.
Though I would really want the 6s, since it has more customizing options....
The smaller 4s roller cab, in the green:
http://r3.cygnuspub.com/files/cygnus/image/PTEN/2008/MAY/600x400/4sseries41f22rand4222rtoolboxes_10101430.png

I may just get the Mastercraft for now and when I out grow it, get a larger box, like the Matco, but maybe get the 6s instead.

Arg, decisions, decisions...

EagleMark

I have another couple roller box's too. Works great! Do you really need one box for everything?

The Matco price is ridicules. Here's one from Craftsman that is bigger at half the money.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00928211000P?mv=rr

As for the Mastercraft... well here's a craftman that is bigger at half the money.
http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_00982495000P?vName=Storage+%26+Garag e&cName=Tool+Storage&sName=Chests&prdNo=7&blockNo=7&blockType=L7

or top and bottom for cost of just top Mastercraft.
http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_009CO47210401B?vName=Storage+%26+Gar age&cName=Tool+Storage&sName=Chest+%26+Cabinet+Combos&prdNo=15&blockNo=15&blockType=L15

Pretty sure ones I linked to are the better grade with roller drawers etc... they have cheaper ones with slide drawers. Like the one I got 35 years ago the slides are wearing out...

Sometimes you can buy them online cheaper then store even with shipping. But my friend works in tool department at Sears so he lets me know when things will be on sale! For Christmas I got my kid a 299 piece 1/4, 3/8/ 1/2 inch drive set for $99. Normally $299.

Six_Shooter
01-13-2012, 08:38 PM
All of those boxes have less storage than the Mastercraft box, the only exception might be the 75" box, which isn't an option anyway, I don't have that much width.

This box is for work, so the sliders NEED to be high quality and last through hard use.

I've nevere really been impressed with Craftsman boxes either.

Even after getting a larger box, I'll stil not have enough space for all of my tools, but yes, I need one large box.

EagleMark
01-13-2012, 08:48 PM
You've probably never seen the Craftsman quality boxes with roller drawers, I've never seen them in stores, just the low quality and mid quality... there are many more options on sizes, there's one just like that Matco but I gave an example of one bigger at half the price. Same size was less. But they do have several qualities. Their best is same as Matco or Snap on but still half the money.

Just an option to your dilemma.. not a cure...

The cursed white is still around and kicking. I have been driving it all week. I actually like driving the dang thing, raides smooth, quiet, and sets good. Plus I am getting spoiled by the heated seat. But the factory muffler had somehow shifted and was hitting the lower controll arm bolt and rattleing/clunking every time I hit a bump, and was driving me bonkers.
I had a couple used flowmasters in storage, cant remember when, where, or why I got them. But I grabbed one and stopped by the muffler shop on the way home last night. The factory muffler is HUGE, its almost as big as the engine itself! Its a wonder that little 4.0 could even breathe. Figured I would open her up a bit.
Its got a nice sound to it now. Nice low rumble, and can just barely hear it inside it. Still nice and quiet (still has the factory cat) I know it has to be helping it. Seems to be running a little better and smoother.

Still has the whining in the rear axle. :mad1:
And I just kinda did some jerry rigging for the bower motor. I put it through a 30 amp relay, and found a old cell phone charger and wired up the leads to when I plug it into the cig lighter, it turns on the relay and powers the blower motor.....redneck engineering at its best  It is only temporay. Uhg...
Spent two hours tonight screwing around with two Linksys routers.

The one has been running for a few years now, and this morning decided to not connect to the intarweeb, at all. Apparently, I forgot the password to access the router settings, so I tried to reset the router, several times, to no avail. The other router, that I got from a friend of mine a while ago, for a planned expanded network, also had issues resetting, but eventually did. Good thing I had the spare router, so that I could get the WiFi connected through the house again.

I will NEVER buy another linksys product again, not because this router has seemed to fail, electronics do that, but I tried to use the Linksys "Live Chat," which seems to require the product to be within a certain time period to get any support, otherwise they will charge $29.99 for a one time support session, or $39.99 for a 6 month support period, or 6 support sessions, which ever comes first.
Thanks Linksys, you have now lost a customer that used to use almost exclusively Linksys products.

The new network will use routers and switches from a different company, leaning towards D-link, since my D-link modem seems to be a good product, so far.

It turns out the router I have been using is not bricked, I have been able to connect to it, change the name and IP address, so it may just be time to take it to a pawn shop and get rid of it.

Just spent all day sunday instaling a new water heater in the house. :mad1:

Its in a small box/cubby hole in my closet. Went in ther to get a shirt and smelled a musty smell, felt the floor around the heater box and carpet is soaking wet. I mean squishy wet. :mad1:
Long story short, thing rusted out from the inside. Old one had in/out on the side, new one is on top. Had to do some plumbing, but I did install valves on both the inlet and outlet of the new pipes I ran. Just thinking ahead.

Now I am just trying to dry out the carpet. I vaccumed out as much as I possiably could. I have a fan in there now and just bought some moisture absorber things to hang in there to try and soak up the moisture in the air as it comes out of the carpet.

I just found out that the guy who "accidentally" stole my Chevelle engine then offered me a good race engine in trade screwed me over twice. I pulled the Bowtie heads off the race engine to sell them and found one head has an external crack that was fiberglassed closed and painted, and the other head had a bent exhaust valve and water damage from a failed head gasket. The block isn't the high nickel block most of the race guys are looking for and I don't recognize the rods, either. And the oil pump has been removed for a dry sump app which may mean modifications have been made to the oil galleys. Now I'm wondering if my plan to use the shortblock with a set of Vortec heads is worth any more than the scrap value of the block. So much for the guys on the race team sticking together after the car owner died.

Oh, I feel the pain of a failed water heater. We once came home after a 3 day weekend to find the cold water line had split and destroyed flooring and sheetrock in several rooms. Glad you were able to catch yours before major damage and expense. Tip: Calcium Chloride, sometimes sold as "Ice Melter," poured into a plastic bowl will draw moisture out of the air.

On demand is a little slower to get hot water but after that it never ends! No more quick showers! Waiting to see what the utility bills do when we get a full month in. Nice thing about this new heater is the drop in filter, no more cleaning a foam pad. Wife said she already noticed way less dust in house. One side of the AC coil in cabinet had a 1/4 inch layer of dust on it almost like a felt pad and peeled off. Spent a good amount of time cleaning the entire coil. Man the wind blows around the house now with that free flowing. That alone has got to help AC in summer...

Holy crap Batman!!! Don't install Windows Media Player update to 11. Or if you do disable media sharing! Then it just reinstalls itself on next startup? 2 days I've been chasing what I thought was a virus as my CPU usgae with nothing running was using 50 to 70% of my power? Found the exe in task manager and did a search thinking it would be a virus and it's Microsoft Windows Media player. What the heck were they thinking when they designed this to be able to use 1/2 to 3/4 of a 2.2 GHz processor?

Just slowed my computer to a stand still. I usually have several programs open all day and never an issue. Have Winnows update set to auto so didn't notice the update from Windows Media Player 10 to 11 at first.

But when I started using my image software doing some big graphis for print, not web my computer was at a complete stand still, not locked up or fail. Looked at my gauges I have on desktop for CPU and RAM and CPU was at 100% ram was at 81% for several minutes! Usually never hit 50 to 80% for a few seconds.

It's a CPU HOG! And I only had it set to share on my home network, not with internet, and no other computers were on? So I don't know what is was doing. Found the exe command all over online, virtually shuts down slower computers and worse on XP. Disabled it and all is well!

Start button and search for services.msc then look for "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" file name is " wmpnetwk.exe " right click, properties, startup type DISABLE, tab on top to Recovery and set all three to "Take No Action" restart computer. Wow fast again!

Also try TweakNow PowerPack 2011 It does registry cleanup, registry defrag, all sorts of cool maintenance stuff, has RAM optimizer that dumps the 68MB windows saves from startup settings to free up RAM, easy way to turn off programs that are in startup menu. Very cool, free software!

I have reaffirmed today that I cannot stand working on the GM V660 family of engines. 2 days to replace an intake manifold gasket on an '02 Malibu thanks in part to clips, brackets, and supports that all seem designed with no thought for servicing the vehicle. I can do the same job on a V8 van in 1/2 the time including flushing out the crankcase, and that application requires laying down to access everything inside the van thanks to the school bus door linkage and repeated trips from inside to outside and back because the front of the engine can only be reached from under the hood. No matter what I do with these engines it always turns into a PITA.

And thanks again GM for Death-Cool. None of this would have been necessary if you geniuses hadn't tried to corner the market on coolant additives.

I feel your pain, we have a '99 Grand Am, 3.4L, original engine crapped out, broke the camshaft ,learned later from tear down was due to rusty cam journal (intake gasket failure previously I'm guessing), I went to PullandSave to get an engine, pulled a '02 brought it home put it in lasted 3 weeks for $140 - combustion gases in coolant.:mad1: Then spent $700 on Ebay to get a used '04 one from a salvage place in WI. I googled the VIN, and found a police report in Wisconsin from when it had been totaled in a low speed front/side impact, so I new it was running when it was hit. So far we have about 4K miles on it and it seems to be doing real well. I have gotten to the point where I can go from empty engine bay to running in about 3 hours though.:rolleye:
But yes the salvage engine had Death-Cool in it on arrival. Needles to say it got flushed and regular coolant put in.

1project2many

Dex-Cool was an orange colored coolant invented by Texaco with GM and introduced into GM vehicles around 94 or 95. It was promoted as a long life, silicate free antifreeze which wouldn't require replacement for up to 100,000 miles. Unfortunately real world results showed that Dex-Cool tended to form sludge if air were allowed to enter the cooling system, and that it would attack the rubber inserts in the gaskets GM was using.

The main reason Dex-Cool exists is because Texaco and GM decided they didn't want to pay Prestone's licensing fees to use traditional coolant. Prestone held the patent on the additive package and in order to avoid patent infringement Dex-Cool used Organic Acid Technology. It seems to have worked best in vehicles designed to use Dex-Cool but OEM retrofitted vehicles had a bunch of problems. Heater cores and radiators got plugged, coolant reservoirs developed a dirty scum which fooled owners into thinking the reservoir was full, and radiator caps and filler necks got plugged so they couldn't relieve pressure or wouldn't draw antifreeze from the overflow. The most common problem today is that intake manifold gaskets split and leak. If you're lucky they leak outside the engine but we've lost several that had been slowly leaking into the crankcase. The engine I just fixed had been leaking externally for a while but had just started to leak into the crankcase.

Dex-Cool today is supposed to be reformulated. It's a different color, has a different smell, and does seem to stay cleaner. But I'm more than happy to stay with traditional coolant. I use virgin coolant and mix it with distilled water which ensures there are no extra minerals and the PH is right where it needs to be. I can test with "coolant test strips" and do every couple of years but in direct contrast to GM's marketing, the antifreeze seems to last more that 3 years or 30,000 miles. If I do see that the additive package is being depleted I'll buy a can of coolant additive that's used in the heavy truck industry and add enough to my coolant to restore the protection levels.

Do some searches about OAT and Blazer/Jimmy/Bravada heater cores with DEX Cool. Lotsa bad stories. GM had multiple bulletins all implying the customer was at fault before they bit the bullet and introduced a six hour check and flush designed to clean the core (IMO it was about 30% effective). The splitting intake gasket is a huge PITA for the V660 community. In fact, there's a class action settlement over Dex-Cool, sludge, and six cylinder engines. Dex Cool? It's been Death Cool to me since 98!

That probably explains why 1994-95-96-97 LT1 engines are always loaded with crap in cooling system? Have to remove knock sensors to flush bottom of block of the crud. Did mine and couldn't beleive the crap that came out of heater core, then I had heat for a week, then it all settled in there again, flushed the heater core and went 2 weeks, flushed more crud out, lasted about a month, pulled knock sensoors and flushed entire system agin, had to use a wire to open holes of crud where knocks went, loads of flushing. Finally have heat all winter now. But I do have that sludge stain in overflow coolant tank.

I almost went 3500 when the SPEC Stg2 smoked, but my 3400 is low miles and a "factory freak" compared to times I've seen other runs with them, so I kept it. My last Beretta went 14.9@93 with this same 3400 with just air intake, exhaust & UDP with the stock 4t60e when the other Beretta guys were in the 15.2-15.5 range with similar mods. This fall I went 14.4@92 with 4th gear trouble when I broke my 5spd. I think it will be knocking on the door of 13s with a clean run.

I was 16 when I bought my GTZ, so you can imagine how much time it spent under 4000rpm...not much!

So I got a new (to me) vehicle today...

For free...

The parents-in-law of a friend of mine had trouble with their truck today in my neighbourhood, literally. They live about an hour away and were down here for an auction sale, when the tranny line developed a leak, causing the fluid to evacuate the truck. They pulled over at a highway exit near my place, then limped it down the street until they were at the gas station that is two blocks away. So my friend called me, asking if I could go take a look and see if it's something that could be fixed. It is, just didn't want to do it on the ground in the rain today, they were going to leave the truck to get fixed, then come back for it. They already had their daughter with their new truck on the way down to get the trailer home.

I had to leave in the mean time to take care of a few things, and told them to call me when their daughter got there. When they called, they already had the trucks swapped and asked me if I wanted the truck for parts, I was like "What?" So I went back, and they signed the ownership over to me. :yikes:

So I need to see what it needs, and decide what to do from there.

Pictures tomorrow, when there's sun light.

BTW, it's a 2000 Chevy Yukon, seems to be quite loaded. Decent shape too.

What would it take to fix the car? Might be easier or cheaper than getting a new vehicle.

Sorry Lucky, the more I look at what this Yukon has, the more I'm thinking about keeping it and selling the Dakota. I just wish this was a bonefied truck, and not one with a heated cargo space.

at the very least, it looks like you found out that the B-bodies are excellent vehicles to be in if you get nailed directly at the driver's door.

took it like a champ.

Just more work then I am willing to do, would rather have the motor and trans for little project car...

took it like a champ.Yeah the outcome could have been much worse in a little POS... neither air bag went off, but I guess they should'nt unless it's a front collision...

If he were in his Toyota in background it probably would not have hurt it or went under and flipped it...

I guess I am on someone's $__t list today as well. Driving to work this morning in the Grand Am, and my steering gets stiff, then temp starts creeping up and battery light turns on. Pulled over to let it cool.........alternator mount broken. Started it up and coasted in to the parking lot. Took out the alternator and mount, Tig welded it back togther with lots of extra material, and put it back on. It works fine now. Need a new belt though.

What else did I pick up tonight?

Ohhh yeeeeaaah...

Another complete (less harness and ECM), Corvette Crossfire set-up. :D

I now have my spare TBs to swap onto the truck, to get a pair bushed. :D

1project2many
03-26-2012, 01:49 PM
Hah! I didn't think anyone was interested in those anymore. If you'd mentioned wanting a couple of TB's I would have offered a set. I'm considering pulling mine off and switching to a 454 TB and Smoke Ram manifold. The Xfire makes nice torque but I'm interested in the challenge of making the original 60's design intake work as well with better flow. The crossfire's been on my truck since '93 so I have to laugh when guys at car shows call it "cease-fire injection."

Looks like I lucked out today! Guy that wanted to buy my wrecked Roadmaster said he wasn't going to, and sadi to come look at his 1995 White Woddy Chevy Caprice with a blown LT1 engine! So I did and except for the motor... the body and interior is as good or better then mine!

So I bought it for $500. :jfj:

Kid is going to do all the motor and trans swap then I will have a left over LT1 4L60e trans harness PCM and the Roadmaster wagon to part out...

Nice score!

Got me a nice score myself, mower came into the shop, wasnt running right, the other tech was working on it, found it blew a head gasket, pulled the head and a little water had got in the cyl and gave it a light coat of surface rust. Customer comes and looks at it and doesnt want to fix it. Asks if anyone wants to buy it, I overhear it and walk over, ask if hes selling it, he says yep, I ask how mutch and say $100. I pause for a second letting it sink in, thinking hes kidding. I reach in my wallet, pull out a $100 bill, hand it to him, he puts up his hands and say "she's your problem now" I kinda stood there for a second stunned. I had just so happened to have the money in my pocket as I had just sold another mower I bought and fixed. But I have never had one like this.
John deere X585, 2 cyl kawasaki fuel injected, liquid cooled engine, power steering and deck lift, shaft driven 62 inch deck, FOUR WHEEL DRIVE. New these things were somewhere between 8-10K. I see used ones online for sale for 5-7k :yikes: These are the largest "lawn mowers" JD makes before you go to a actual compact tractor.
Gonna rebuild the engine for a couple hundred bucks, clean it up, and make a few bucks. :jfj:

12.5 to 12.8 to 1 for power is all I've ever read or heard from engine builders for power. So their 12.6 to 1 seems logical. But where did they come up with 15.4 to 1 for economy? May be a safe economy without to much lean heat...

With all the other data loggers mentioned I'm surprised it is not already supported?

DataMaster has this built in, maybe we could get it on the feature requst list for TunerPro?

Verry interesting. How exactly does it work, what data do you enter in and how does it calculate hp.

In DataMaster there are several requirments to fill out, now that I think of it, it may be for 1/4 mile time not dyno....

Hope he get's TunerPro in the lineup!

shot a few emails back and forth last night, what it does is use known vehicle weight, known gearing, known tire size and then from this it extrapolates torque(and generates HP from torque) based off of how quickly the engine revs up under load. it also uses TPS to signal when the vehicle is at WOT and that's basically all of the info it uses. time is based off of a timestamp in the datastream as well.

it's actually very similar to how the dynojet dynos work, and comes to VERY close numbers to a real dynojet dyno.

so while it may not be a 100% accurate representation of wheel HP/TQ, it will at the very least give you a basis for what your changes did(increased or decreased power). there is also an option for SAE correction due to air temps and possibly baro pressure.

for increased resolution, personally, i will be making mode 3(maybe it's mode 2?) commands to grab ONLY necessary items from the datastream, so that i can bump up my sampling rate into the 40Hz range. :)

Sounds really interesting. I would be curious to try it out if it gets hooked up with TP. Only thing I dont know is my cherokee's weight. I'm thinking its somewhere around 2.5 tons. I know its not light.

EagleMark
04-22-2012, 04:54 AM
I downloaded it and only got as far as choosing the car and mine was not there? Mostly import stuff. But maybe we could get more data in if TP gets in too...

The local machine shop has been super busy, but finally got my mower engine back from them late friday afternoon. They cleaned and checked the block, said the cylinders were almost perfect, less than half a thousands wear, even on the side that got some rust on it. Rust was super light, left no pitting, and they were able to do a super light hone and call it good! Cleaned, checked the heads, valve job and resurface, all done for a whopping $73.

Went in to work yesterday off the clock and worked from 7-12 reassembleing the engine. New rings, rebuilt the waterpump, all new gaskets and seals, and new head bolts. Pressure washed all the dirt/grass out of the radiator, oil cooler, and frame of the mower. Gonna drop it back in monday.

So what are you going to do with the thousands of dollars made from this venture?

Hey, since your a lawn mower tech, what oil would you recomend for briggs and stratton or Honda OHV engine? Honda is on a new pressure washer I have and Briggs is in a new lawn mower I got. My last lawn mower only lasted 16 years and died last summer, started puking oil out head I think but still ran... should I try and put a head gasket on it? Craftsman Eager 1?

If there is no listing in the owners manual for the above mentioned engines, then just run a good quality 10W-30.
All JD gas engines use 10W-30, and they have used brigs, kawasaki, and kohler. Even some onan back in the day. Even seen a yanmar gas burner in a pro gator.

Not sure on the oil leak, kinda hard to know without seeing it and knowing what engine it has, and what the condition of the engine is, and where its leaking from, also not knowing the condition of the rest of the mower. Sometimes repairs can cost more than a mower is worth.

Hoping to get a good penny for this mower, I will take the money I get from it and buy the parts I need to finish my build on my cherokee. I have front and rear dana 60's that need rebuilt and lockers, plus lots of other various parts to install them, like steering, shocks, driveshafts. Plus the parts I need to install my NV4500 and NP 205. But I have already rebuilt those and have made my adapter to bolt them together, and have the conversion bellhousing to bolt it to my 401.
Mower should be worth $5000-7000 when done.

The X585 lives again! Fired it up this morning. Had to drain the tank as I found some water in the fuel when I changed the fuel filter. I definately didnt want that going through my new engine! Gotta love fuel injection, she fired right up and purrs like a kitten. Ran full throttle for a bit to break everything back in and open the t-stat and burp the cooling system.
Next is the deck, cleaned it up real good, couple of the spindles need bearings, needs blades, and the deck wheels are all shot, the idiot PO let them ride on the ground and wore them out. Hope to mabey have it ready to be for sale by the end of the week.

Ok, I'll bite. How do you mow without the deck wheels touching the ground? On most of the mowers I own the wheels are designed to support the deck.

RobertISaar
04-25-2012, 04:01 AM
i'm also drawing a blank there... unless you don't want the grass cut very short, the wheels will pretty much need to be on contact.

Six_Shooter

AFAIK, The wheels are only there for uneven ground, to support the deck for short distances.

In other news, I bought a MINT 1972 240Z dash for my car. :D
