I'd like to monitor communication on my vehicle's data bus between a pay-for scantool and the pcm. I have a Y cable and a laptop. I'm wondering if Tunerpro could be tasked to recording and displaying the communication. If not, is there a useful and free application that would work with an AVL USB cable?

Thanks,

You didn`t mention what protocol you want to monitor. ALDL stuff or later vpw or can.

Give some more details on that avl cable.

Apologies... Cable is AVT 852. I missed the typo.
Communication protocol is J1850-VPW.
PCM is GM Black Box, 16263494.

Thanks,

You are pretty much set up for bus sniffing.

On the avt site there is a link for the AVT hex terminal program. That is all you need.

Get it and follow the install instructions. Some dll needs to be registered manually, but in the manual it is explain very well.

When you open the hex terminal, select the Com port for the avt cable, and send e1 33 command to set the avt to vpw protocol. At that point you should get some streaming data.

To save the log session to file, click on the "open log file" button and put some name in the dialog.

You know...

I have had that program on the laptop for years. I've only ever used it to ping the pcm when I was first playing around with OBDII comms. I never even thought about recording chatter from other devices.

Thank you.
