i'm about 25 years late to the party but i'm finally playing with some obd-ii data with the goal of eventually writing some good software for it.

got an obdlink mx+ elm adapter and also this xpro

as motivation, i have a 2000 4.0 jeep that seems to be J1850 VPW (cool because that's what all the test bench ECMs i have use too). it needs some help.

one thing i need to check is the cam and crank sensor relationship, as i found the bolt on the cam sensor was kind of loose. from what i've learned, the cam sensor is set just like a distributor, but you align it at idle while watching a value on the scan tool

i kind of figured there'd be a lot of good free or low-cost windows programs out there that have mapped some of the 'extended Chrysler PIDs' or whatever you'd call them, but i'm finding absolutely none

i'm also curious what obd-ii elm software everyone else is using just for scanning or diagnosis so i can see what's out there. all the ones i've currently downloaded just by googling 'obd-ii software' seem to be pretty rough. i see a lot of references to torque pro for android, does it have the best database of odd PIDS out there?

The OBDLink software for Windows that is the companion software for your MX+ device is pretty good. I paid for the extended parameter ID's and I guess I got my money's worth - it was not expensive. I think you need this Windows software anyway to update firmware on the MX+ device.

For Android, I'd have to say my favorite is probably "MotorData OBD" followed by "OBDLink" from the people that made your MX+ device. Both of these are in the Play Store. Once again, I paid for the extended PIDS. I'm not a fan of Torque Pro or Dash Command for Android because I have yet to figure out how to get either one to live stream PIDS.

Using this simple app and streaming PID collection of tools, I discovered and solved why my Long Term Fuel Trims were so high. No high dollar tools required.

For early Jeep you are looking for a DRB III software and cable. The real good oem stuff. Some guy have ripped some of data but can remember where I was looking at this. It was some project on github.

Elm software sucks in every way so I can`t really recommend any. I really hope that is finally resolved with your help at least on the GM side. I already figured a way how to rip a list of supported PIDS for the most popular GM vpw pcms.

i do want to write something this winter

very surprised even for money nobody has a piece of software that can get the extended chrysler PIDs, ABS codes, or anything like that with an ELM interface

so lets say i do manage to 'borrow' a DRB or whatever does it for a short time. can i basically connect the device in parallel with my OBD-II adaptor (and the vehicle obviously) to sniff it out?

If the jeep bus is basically the same as gm vpw it should work. You need to set the obdlink device in sniff mode with some commands and it will dump all of the communication on the bus.

Steveo, let me know if I can help test anything. I have some spare pcms, obdlink and a xpro. Could test on my truck as well.

Capability to change VIN and remove security would be great for used ECM swaps.

if someone knows the bytes necessary to do what you achieve i will make a tool that will transmit and receive those bytes

Tuner Pro RT allows the VATS security to be removed. And if I remember correctly, PCM Hammer allows for a VIN change, within limits.

I'm speaking of Chrysler specifically. Their ECM/PCMs are junk, replace them regularly and half of those have security and are paper weights.
