I have a 4 cylinder application 22RE, non stock with stand alone ecu. The crank trigger mounting is approx 10 o'clock the harmonic balancer was machined and the 36-1 wheel from a separate vender that was welded on the back with the missing tooth centered on the TDC/0 mark. Is this normal operating procedure or should the missing tooth have been positioned at the sensor when the harmonic is at TDC. Using 1X distributer for cam timing.

What ecu are you using? Usually the gap is a few teeth before TDC. Example, LS3 60-2 gap is 14 teeth before TDC(center of sensor is leading edge of 14th tooth after gap at #1 TDC).

Baldurs reply,

Normally you want to have the missing tooth at the sensor when the engine is somewhere between 50-100 degrees before TDC. It really does not matter much and my ECUs do not place any arbitrary restrictions on the location but it is good practice to keep the missing tooth out of the normal range of ignition timing as the timing gets less accurate where the tooth is missing, not only because of the missing tooth itself but also due to the way variable reluctance sensors behave with variations in the density of metal placed in front of them.
