Interesting question. l think I'd loosen all intake valve rockers and pressurize crankcase to 1-2 psi with air. See if air is exiting throttle body. Test works better if you have a smoke machine which gives visual confirmation.

Plug off all pcv hoses in the valve covers, start the engine, and then after 1 min, remove the oil cap and check for suction by putting you palm over the neck. if the oil cap is flush with the valve cover, use the pcv vent hose instead. Another symptom is high oil consumption and excessive spark knock. No smoke machine needed.

Yep. Good approach if the rings are good.

I haven't used an old style smallblock gasket in 10 years. I'd start with Felpro but maybe that's not the best choice?

got exasht in the #6 intake port,my dremil valve job could of failed,i just knowed it was and gasket leaking. them old valves was pitted proble pitting then re sealing from time to time.harder to change now than where I was, more to come.it wasn't the valves, the m pickup air gap varided shaft wasn't bent think I might have ground to much out and got the spark to hot hairs on all cap posts in side the cap.

fel-pro 1255 thickest and best gasket ESPECIALLY for vortec. if you dont use this gasket then your next bet would be to torque intake to heads BEFORE torqueing heads down.(this trick applies to the vortec intakes. an OLD head told me all this long ago
