Newbie to forum so please don't flame me for simple questions. When you are salvaging the wiring harness from a donor vehicle do you need to also get the ALDL port? I was reading about what was needed and it mentioned cutting the harness wire as far as possible. Could someone please clarify.

The ALDL wiring is buried deep in the donor vehicle dash harness!:mad1:

I solder splice the cut ALDL connector back into the computer wiring harness.

Thanks That's what I was thinking but was unsure about cutting and reconnectiing

you'll probably put the aldl port somewhere different, which means you'll have to splice anyway.

it's pretty minor surgery. only two wires are truly important, ground and data

Where is a good mounting point in a CJ-7 for the aldl and the Ecm? I know later Jeeps had the ECM mounted under the dash on the passenger side. They didn't have any ALDL ports.

I'll have to answer this one myself as I have an upcoming Jeep project. I'll probably place it to the right of the driver's leg near the lower center of the dash. That way the connector is closer to the passenger's seat and laptop cables won't be draped over the steering column.
