No experience with PL2303HX chip...all the ones I have are FT232 based.

It's a Prolific IC, and my experience has never been a good one with Prolific ICs. I would stick to FTDI.

the FTDI FT232 is a proven route with few issues, even if you do get suckered into a clone.

I have a CP2102 I've been meaning to play with, but no time to do so lately.

I tried both the cp2102 and the pl2303, neither one would work for me so I bought a ft232 and have never had any issues with that chip.
