View Full Version : How much fuel pressure do I really need?

I'm doing my first TBI conversion. I pulled almost everything I need from a junkyard pickup with a Chevy 350. I still need to buy an inline fuel pump. I have read in a few places that you only need about 15 - 20 psi however, I see many recommendations for 100+ psi pumps. So, how much fuel pressure do I really need?

Thanks

you misunderstand - the pump doesn't create pressure. the regulator does. you buy a pump based on flow, not pressure.

(but there are "low pressure" pumps for a carb or whatever, and "high pressure" pumps for injection systems, you want a high pressure pump...)

I am running this pump. Federal/Mogul stated this pump was rated for 9-22 psi, but google shows it 12-17psi with 45-50 gph.

I have used this one numerous times on TBI, TPI and LT1 setups.

It is a replacement for a factory Ford setup and can be had at any major autoparts house within hours if not in-stock. A good thing if you break down on a road trip miles away from a big city. It uses the ford style fuel line quick connects as well. I have been able to pickup fittings to convert the inlet and outlet to AN lines as well.

IIRC these are the adapters you will want if you convert to AN with this pump.

Sorry to revive an old thread, FAST355, have you been satisfied with Airtex brand pumps like the one you linked to? I haven't had much for good experience with them.

The truck i pulled my tbi system from had an airtex fuel pump. The tank of the doner truck was full of rusty gas water and so were the fuel lines. When i got home I hooked the fuel pump up to a bucket of water and a 12 volt battery and blew out alot of gross brown stuff until the pump ran clear water. Anyway i don't know how old the pump is but it has been working fine for me for a year keeping a constant 14 psi. Although if i was to buy another fuel pump i heard good things about the stock ac delco fuel pump. I think its a little cheaper also. Although the pump you want to know about is not the same as the one i have i figured them being the same brand might give you a little insight.
