hmm..... i know some Geos had flash units earlier than that.... and i want to say some saturns as well?

those aren't really mainstream GM brands though

Geo Storm was the first but technically they were EEPROM, not flash. The 92-93 J car with 2.2 and 5 speed could also be reprogrammed through the ALDL, but again, EEPROM not flash. Saturn? A different kind of car...

for purposes of being able to change a calibration without removing/replacing a PROM, EEPROM and flash are essentially the same, yes?

Flash is techically a type of EEPROM. However, flash can have parts of the memory erased and re-written while the older EEPROM chips required the whole chip to be erased before writing.
