View Full Version : VATS and Passlock - UART and Serial 2 DATA - L36 to L67 Powertrain swap

I am no stranger to these GM anti-theft features, but there is an unknown presenting itself on my current project. I have a 2000 Impala LS (3800na) that is getting the engine, transmission, and PCM from a 2000 Buick Regal GS (3800sc). I need to know if the VATS/Passlock relearn procedure will work between the Impala BCM and the Regal PCM. The pinout for the Impala shows the BLUE (C1) plug PIN-15 (TAN) as circuit 800 -- UART Serial Data (unused pin on Regal PCM). The pinout for the Regal shows the BLUE (C1) plug PIN-58 (PURPLE) as circuit 1807 -- CLASS 2 Serial Data.

The differences noted:

2000 Impala LS PCM:

I have pinouts from a few different year and model PCM to compare. PIN-58 and PIN-59 show both to be Serial 2 Data on one diagram.
I do not have the exact pinout for either of these 2 cars, but the details of my self-made diagram shows to be accurate and consistent with other PCM units from neighboring vehicles.

What I would like to know is more detail about the VATS relearn procedure between BCM and PCM.
Will this work?
Is a VATS bypass needed? If so, can it be accomplished with a bypass module from an aftermarket vendor?
Is a reflash of the PCM needed?
Will the Impala BCM communicate UART password to the unused pin on the Regal PCM?

Anyone know the answers? Thanks in advance!

Most like it will work

Both systtems use class 2 serial data for fuel enable.

The vin number on bcm and pcm should match.
So you need to change that on the new pcm.

Yes, I am aware of the VIN issue. A plan to flash that and any other needed changes to the new PCM is in the works.
What about the dark blue wire on the BLUE plug C1 Pin-70 labeled Theft Deterrent Fuel Enable? Omit this wire and function with the new PCM installation?

Looks like c1-70 wire is for analog PWM fuel enable signal.
You can discard it.
In the service manual it says Class 2 signal for both cars.

If you program the Pcm, why not just disable the vats.
The bcm for this cars is very problematic.

My intentions are to remove the VATS when I get the PCM flashed with the VIN. Unfortunately, I am past my budget at this time and this project is taking place now, where I have the resources and facilities to do it. Then.. I will need to drive back home, a few states away. Another detail I need to investigate is the Impala being a California Emissions car with the auxiliary AIR Pump and related components.

IF... This equipment remained pinned to the new PCM, will it function? Does the mainboard of the PCM have the ability to operate this equipment pre-manufactured at the hardware level? If so, are they P&P functional or would this need to be addressed with the PCM flash?

I am very grateful for your replies on this topic BTW... There are many small details that must be thoroughly investigated as I do not wish to fight the battle of tending to any issues that could have been taken care of easier and faster with the car in its current dismantled state.

I should have mentioned my goal here. Is it possible to start and drive the car as I intend to get the new PCM flashed in the vehicle at a later date, or send it in if needed. With the Passlock question out of the way, the emissions and other necessary wiring and component changes are being checked and double checked before I leave town. As of now, my request for programming include VIN, disable VATS - Passlock, and possibly enable auxiliary emissions functionality so the job can be done proper. I am not intending to go with extra high performance equipment, but a modular pulley system and a CAI are to be considered in the future. Until then, the goal is to keep the OEM design intact and fully functional.

There is a Software switch in the PCM which system to use Class2 or Analog PWM.
From the factory it is set at class 2.
If you change it to use PWM, and put a wire at c1-70 with appropriate analog signal it will work.

Best approach will be completely disable vats.

I am trying to find out whats the best settings to do that.
Do you know the regal vin number to check the os id.
It should be written on the PCM label also.
Just write down all the info from the label.
California emission system shouldn`t bother you.

You will need to program the PCM first
Or the car won`t start after the transplant.

First you should send the regal pcm to mail-order tune to disable vats.
I will tell later what settings should be changed later.
Than you do the transplant.

OK, here's what I found so far. The GM Tech-2 is a tool I have some experience with, but it has been over 12 years since I had my hands on one. I'm still looking for a local shop who will let me use their Tech-2 in my local area. I found one guy who does this mobile, but his english wasn't that great and he stated he doesn't disable VATS or Passlock. He said a few other things I could not understand due to dialect, but I heard his fee of $150. I doubt I will be using his services. The automotive forums centered around these engines have a few recommended places. ZZPerformance and Sinister Performance are mentioned frequently. Any feedback on these options?

I found a CarQuest location capable of VIN flashing for $95. I also found a privately owned GM service shop with a Tech-2. They quoted me $60 for a VIN flash only after I mentioned I would not be holding them accountable for anything that may go wrong. I will need to bring them the PCM with the ALDL connector and bench flash harness to do this. I will be looking into the PCM programmable features and other technical data after this project hits the road and any bugs found to be worked out.

You should precisely define Vin flashing

Is it just simple change of vin

or

Is a complete reflash with latest calibration based on the vin number you provide

BCM has been replaced in the vehicle and the Setup New BCM procedure has been successfully completed.
Ignition key cylinder assembly has been replaced.

There are three ways of performing the Theft Deterrent Re-Learn procedure, depending on the type of Techline equipment available:


Techline terminal and a Scan Tool (http://www.gearhead-efi.com/servlets/RetrieveTif?pic=59260) (quickest method).
T-50 or T-60.
Re-Learn without a Scan Tool (http://www.gearhead-efi.com/servlets/RetrieveTif?pic=59260) or Techline equipment (slowest method).

Theft Deterrent Re-Learn Using Techline Equipment and Tech 2 Scan Tool (http://www.gearhead-efi.com/Fuel-Injection/#ss4-610480)

Connect the Scan Tool (http://www.gearhead-efi.com/servlets/RetrieveTif?pic=59260) to the Data Link Connector (DLC) on the vehicle.
At the Scan Tool (http://www.gearhead-efi.com/servlets/RetrieveTif?pic=59260) main menu, select SERVICE PROGRAMMING.
Enter the requested information.
Select REQUEST INFO.
Disconnect the Scan Tool (http://www.gearhead-efi.com/servlets/RetrieveTif?pic=59260) from the vehicle.
Connect the Scan Tool (http://www.gearhead-efi.com/servlets/RetrieveTif?pic=59260) to the Techline terminal.
Select SERVICE PROGRAMMING SYSTEM (SPS).
Select TERMINAL TO TECH 2 PROGRAMMING.
Select DONE.
Follow instructions on the Techline terminal to Handheld Communications Setup screen.
Select THEFT MODULE RE-LEARN.
Select PROGRAM at the summary screen. The terminal will download information to the Scan Tool (http://www.gearhead-efi.com/servlets/RetrieveTif?pic=59260) .
Disconnect the Scan Tool (http://www.gearhead-efi.com/servlets/RetrieveTif?pic=59260) from the Techline terminal.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the BCM will be prepared for re-learn.
A security timer will be on for approximately 10 minutes. During the 10 minute wait period, Scan Tool (http://www.gearhead-efi.com/servlets/RetrieveTif?pic=59260) must remain connected to the vehicle.
Turn the ignition switch off when the PCM and BCM are prepared to re-learn.
Turn the ignition switch to the start position.
The engine should start when the ignition switch is turned to the start position.
Disconnect the Scan Tool (http://www.gearhead-efi.com/servlets/RetrieveTif?pic=59260) from the DLC.

Theft Deterrent Re-Learn Without Scan Tool or Techline Equipment (http://www.gearhead-efi.com/Fuel-Injection/#ss5-610480)This procedure takes approximately 30 minutes. Make sure the battery is fully charged before proceeding.


Turn the ignition switch off.
Turn the ignition switch all the way from the off to the start position, then leave it in the on position. Note: The engine will not crank.
The SECURITY will come on and stay on for at least 10 minutes.
Turn the ignition switch off for five seconds.
Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 again for a second time.
Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 again for a third time.
Turn the ignition switch off.
Turn the ignition switch all the way to the start position. The engine should now start.
Check for BCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).


ImportantAfter programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis:


Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
Clear all history DTCs.

The pcm-s from the impala and regal have the same pinout.
If you put the regal pcm in the impala than you can flash it from the car`s adld conector.
After vin change you can try vats relearn with the regal pcm and try to start the car /make sure you run it for 10-15 seconds only/.
if the test is sucssesful you will have to do the vats relearn again with the impala pcm.
