I own a 1972 Ford F-250 4x4 with a 390 v8 with a 4speed trans .The 4speed will be swaped out for NV4500 5speed but that's another story. I have been looking around this site for awhile and i have decided to do a GM TBI conversion . Well I work in a wrecking yard so finding parts is a no brainer . I found a 88 Chevy truck that donated the computer an its wiring harness, sensors, distributor . Now I'm sitting here with a huge pile of wires trying to figure out what I need to keep an whats going to end up on the floor! I'm doing the build your own distributor out of a ford points distributor an a small cap GM HEI distributor as out lined here on this site. This build is going to take awhile like a year maybe cause i'm building a new motor an painting the truck plus the 5speed swap. I will take pic's as i go along here an of course asking a ton of questions cause this is my first efi conversion if this works great my 1978 bronco is next to get the GM TBI conversion

I'm curious how things go. I too am in the process of putting a TBI fuel injection system on a ford motor. My project is different:

-I'm using a 351W
-Its going in a boat
-I'm using the ford duraspark distributor (with modifications)
-I'm not using the VSS, EGR, Knock, or any other transmission related sensors.

So far the TBI system is installed, the engine is running, and I am starting the tuning process.

Good luck!

That sounds like a cool project you got going on. I'm still in the wiring phase like figuring out what to eliminate an what to keep and getting that glob of glue that GM used on the firewall plug.

Acetone melts that glob of glue and does not hurt the wires.

Wiring diagrams are in the $42 info thread. Think one wire at a time. The hardest part of re-wiring a stock harness is planning how to fuse and relay what you need. I like to add a realy to turn it all on! Then you can use the wire that went to points to turn that relay and system on.

Thank you EagleMark for the info. i have been using the wiring diagrams on this site but it still make my head hurt sometimes lol . There good diagrams have been helpful for me. I'm eliminating EGR stuff, auto trans w/VSS wiring, knock sensor so far.I tell you when you get the stock harness unwrapped what a mess of wires!

Yup yup yup! It's not the type of thing for a guy who's strapped for time or has no patience!

Solder and shrink wrap! Take your time! One wire at a time!

I agree its a very slow process and yes I will be soldering an shrink wrapping .This is a learning experience for me.Oh by the way I thank you for such a wonderful site!

When i pulled this harness from the truck there are i plugs that go to the computer then about a foot down is 2 black plugs that go on to a clear double plug .coming out of this plug is a purple wire that is spliced to a purple/white wire and a resister with 2 purple wires on the other side . i cant seem to find this in any wiring diagram oh yea there is a black plug with another resister in it what is this?

If it does not come from or go to ECM, then it's not something EFI related...

Thank you an no it doesnt goto or come from the ECM so it goes on the chopping block.

I know there is a purple and white wire that goes from the ECM (pin C9) to the starter solenoid. I'm not quite sure if it does anything, maybe it lets the ECM know when the starter is cranking.

Yup! Handles Cold Start Crank Fueling.

Sorry for the long wait to update but i have 2 fords that i'm going to do this EFI thing to.so after a ton of research i went to work an got a engine wiring harness out of a 1990 suburban computer 7747. I'm amazed at how simple it was to prep well here's some pics

Okay i got the first harness done today.I eliminated the EGR knock sensors an the ESC . These things will turned off when computer is reflashed. For timing control i'm using the ignition module out of the GM distributor along with the GM coil to. ok here some pics of the finished harness

Okay with projects it seems like things always change or take a diffirent path .Well it has happened here Instead of doing my 72 F-250 first, i'm doing my 1978 Bronco with a 351m first

This is the empty shell waiting for body and paint work

The harness i built seemed to fit perfectly so the rest of the parts i have collected over the last year for this GM TBI system are going onn the bronco . Don't worry I will still be doing the 72 F-250 it's just going to be awhile . I was able to get the throttle body mounted today on the edelbrock intake plus i got the map sensor mounted well i found a bracket that worked great so i used it , well enough babbling time for pics

I think it looks oh so pretty lol well still got some more things to get and the bronco needs a ton of work like rewiring the whole rig . im going to use the the wiring harness kit from speedway so i will keep you all posted

Looks awesome!

Are going to use spark control? If so, are you interested in some helpful tips on modifying the Ford duraspark dizzy? Also, what:

heads
cam
intake

are you using? Parts of my tune might be helpful.

Yes i'm using the module out of the GM distributor with the GM coil I found a diagram on how to wire it to the ford duraspark dizy

heads are stock

cam stock

intake edelbrock performer

of course any help is always appreciated but the rig is a long ways from running i was just mocking everything up

Okay its update time: I have been wondering how i was going to mount the coil and the ignition module. Then one day while i was working at the wrecking yard I saw a coil bracket out of a 97 suburban that had it's ignition module attached to the coil bracket well with a little modification i was able to mount it to the fire wall and fabbed up a piece of aluminum as a heat sink for the ignition module okay here are some pics
