Anybody ran into this?
I've tried everything I can think of but IE has started flagging downloads.
Someone sent me a .bin file via email and I had to flashdrive it on another computer to get it.
Now it's doing the same thing trying to download a .cal file from here.
I've turned on/off smartscreen filter as well as a host of other stuff and finally just reset back to default.
Still getting flagged. I don't feel like downloading firefox really, mainly because no reason for it since I don't really use the web alot on this pc.
I will if I have too but hoping someone has ran into this.
I keep windows update off,but I think recently I went ahead and downloaded some manually awhile back.
Thanks for any help.

I don't use IE, haven't for a long time due to it's slow workings and doing odd stuff like you mention.

I use Chrome, MUCH better than Firefox.

Do you have any other anti-virus programs installed?

I might get a fire lit for this, but no I don't have any firewalls or antivirus installed at all.
The only computer with anything like that is the wifes desktop that the kid uses.
I've not used anything for years (10+). I have gotten about 4-5 virus' ever and maybe only 1 since i've gone antivirus free.
I attribute it to careful online use,and common sense. The few places and people where I download stuff are places I trust so never really had a problem.
Also in the past few years i've kept my online use to either a tablet or iphones/kindles etc..
I only open my laptops or desktop for work stuff or download specific file.

I've not had anything pop up and try to sell me an antivirus,so assuming the antivirus flaggin stuff is windows related (the window looks correct).

windows 7 ships with windows firewall, which actually does a decent job if you have it set to block everything by default.i disable windows defender the second i have avast downloaded, so no comments on it. follow that up with spybot and there is my security "suite" for almost a half decade now.sounds like an IE9 issue... i would perhaps go through windows update and grab everything relevant to IE, see if that fixes the problem.

i'm with you, i never run antivirus/antispyware/registry cleaners/speed improvers on my own computer. i have never had a virus.

but even though you say you rarely use the internet on that computer.. i still have to warn you,

running internet explorer without automatic updates is f$*@ing mental, man. virus scanner or not, you're crazy. how do you think most viruses get spread? that thing is full of patched holes.

install google chrome or firefox or get those updates working regardless of this other problem. it's not like installing an alternative web browser will have any negative effect on your computer.

I do have CCcleaner I use,but that's about it.
I took sixshooters advice and just downloaded chrome.
I used to use firefox because of custom scripts I ran,but got out of browser gaming.
When I downloaded chrome when it first came out it was just loaded with crap and addon's so hadn't messed with it since.
Downloaded yesterday though and doesn't look the same and should work for what I want.
Thanks for advice guys,if I figure out the problem with IE i'll post back up.

Well,Chrome had the same issue so I took Robert and Steveo's advice and installed all the security updates.
After a restart everything was great.
Next time I promise to take advice instead of being stubborn in my ways :)
Thanks guys!

Microsoft Security Essentials is free and good for the virus end. We've done some testing and uses less power then other free virus software. Updates daily and scans daily if set that way, all Auto!

Advanced System Care free version really helps clean up a machine of other issues

Windows updates are a must!
