Anyone have some ideas for a new site logo? I can do some graphic work but no artistic ability so if someone can help lets get some ideas?

perhaps my wife would be interested.... she's into the whole photography/photoshopping thing, i think she's put out a couple of company logos or something like that before too.... i'll have to try and find some examples of her work.

I was thinking about using an injector or injectors in the logo? Maybe an over sized injector with the website name in the middle of the injector? Maybe an ECM connected to an injector with a lighting bolt, with the website name on the ECM?

A flaming Check Engine Light should be installed on all cars from factory for when there is a serious issue! Second stage CEL for high coolant temps, high knock counts, lean conditions etc...

As amusing as a flamming CEL is, I don't think it would be a good logo for us... that would associate us with flamming CEL issues! :mad1:

Greasy fingerprints on a mouse that is a car, with flames from headers, MPFI intake and smoking rear tires would be more like us. Still not sure it would be right...

I often joke about everything electronic being smoked powered ... once the smoke is released from the electronics ... the power is gone!

kind of like automatic transmissions... they're filled with 2 things: transmission fluid and magic. if you lose either one, it quits working.

Well I know for a fact if you open an ECM and the magic smoke comes out it will never work again! Now if you open it and no smoke comes out your good...

Even if it IS in a metal box, we don't want lightning hitting a PCM! :-p

Maybe turn the spark plug over and make the electrode and ground tab form the 'G' in Gearhead...with the lightning making contact there.....?

Sorry I have not been around. Wife is finally home from 62 day hospital stay... she broke her record of 47 days...

I like the logo too! Tell the wife thank you for sharing her talent with us please.

But... it won't work. If put in place of logo the lettering will be to small. If cropped to fit there would be no lightening left or what is left would look like a smuge.

Off Topic: The patent on those E3 plugs is the spark plugs guarenteed "Miss" within a few thousand miles if not instantly... along with dieseling from the small electrodes getting to hot and glowing!

her comment:

so what size are you looking for?

i'm assuming she meant in pixels.

EagleMark
10-03-2012, 07:37 PM
Shape would be more like it. Look at the logo and space available. Does not have to be exact as site logo but needs to be close as to not alter appearance of site. That said you can understand how using the one she made would end up pushing forums down and leaving much blank space on top. Or cropped to size would exclude what makes it cool, the lightening that matches the site. So it's not that the logo she made is wrong, but web design has already been done and it would not work correctly. I have some graphics training along with all the web design, but I'm not artistic, everything you see on this site including the banners I made. I can take anything and combine it with another, add letters, resize and optimize etc... This is what I do. Build it in much bigger workable size, each item on another layer. When done merge all and resize to usable space. This way you still have original for changes, then merge and resize again.

So if shape is similar to original, then I can do whatever is needed to original.

Actually I was just looking for an original logo and thought we could draw from the members as it's all about what we make of it. If I had a logo I could replace the cartoon car with something origanal in what we have or rebuild it accordingly.

Don't let this create any stress! It is supposed to be a fun project for the community.

I've got lots of ideas just like all that were submitted. But not the artistic ability to apply them in PhotShop, my work is all web design related.

Just tried Gearhead image search on Google and got lots more ideas!

I like the wrenches, though a few electronics items would be a good addition.

The thing I don't like about the one with the Mustang, is that well, it's a Mustang, and it's not a Ford hate thing, far from, I have a Mustang in my stable, it's that if someone sees it, or any particular car for that matter, they may get the idea that we cater to only one type of vehicle for tuning.

Here's a logo I came up with. I could do some kind of pencil sketch too. Or maybe a good stylization of an injector. It still needs something to the left of the logotype...but it needs to be sufficiently generic. An injector might do it. http://gearheaddezign.com/

Well, the injector stuff looked dumb. But I kinda like the VE table here. I also like it without though, the VE table takes detail away from the circuit board look. What do you guys think?

Edit: wow...it loses a lot in the upload. But it's nice and crisp in the original.

EagleMark
10-17-2012, 06:41 PM
You have a lot of talent! Logo looks nice!

The forum does optimization on pictures when uploaded, this is why your loosing chrispyness on graphic attachment.

But when croped a little to save room but leave shadowed edges then sized for space it loses visual appearence of all cool stuff? Hardly see circut board and graph or able to read tuning and Conversion... see what I mean? this is close to actual size needed when done. Doesn't look as cool does it?

http://www.gearhead-efi.com/Fuel-Injection/attachment.php?attachmentid=3141&stc=1&d=1350487402

I could increase logo size but it will shift everything down. I just don't like sites that have so much crap up top that every page you need to scroll down to see anything.

A less faded circurt board may help and even a wireframe graph with the colors? Capitol H in GearHead? Put "-" down to Smaller EFI.com to save space? Even loose the Tuning and Conversion?

That graph needs some tuning work to get rid of spikes and valleys... Can't have a stock GM graph!

woody80z28
10-17-2012, 08:12 PM
I know it doesn't work at the current size. But this site has the smallest banner of any board I'm on! haha And you could move the other ad banner to the right and save room that way.

Just resizing the banner a little bigger and no cropping the logo would be the best way to go IMO. Right now the site is very tight at the top anyway. Even without margins and padding the new graphic has some room to breathe as the PCB fades out.

The rainbow graph looked tacky, and making the PCB more visible will cut down on the legibility of the logo.

EagleMark
10-17-2012, 08:36 PM
The banner ad is floating and works with any monitor resolution or screen size tested so I don't want to do that again... but I could go bigger Logo! It is only 60 pixels tall, could easily go 100 or so...

Where did you find 2 banner ads like in your photo? I took them all out as they stretched screen to have to scroll sideways. Should only be one anywhere?

Here's a bin attached with a better looking graph, Main Spark Table. This way you can open it and rotate to position needed. Move it over to left in logo a little would look better.

Then I'll leave it up to people here if they want it!

Of course we will add links for your site here for your participation!

woody80z28

Here's another version. I'm liking the faded circuits better, though.

woody80z28
10-17-2012, 08:46 PM
I moved the banner myself in Photoshop. I will open that bin when I get home and make a change in the spark table. I think the latest logotype is the best, too. Give me a couple days to tweak it and repost. Fresh eyes after a day or two is always better for revisions anyway.

EagleMark
10-17-2012, 09:29 PM
I like the original faded circuits and shadowed to edges better as well. Only reason I suggested lass fade was the circuit was lost when sized. Actually I like all the original better, just a good graph, then moved over to left a bit, less under the letters. Then center both.

dave w
10-17-2012, 10:56 PM
I like the PCB background. I also liked the lighting background. I'm not sure I know which of the two backgrounds I like best. Green is not favorite color, but PCB's are usually green. I like the phrase EFI Tuning & Conversions, seems to decribe what most the posts are about. I'm not 100% sold on the VE Map, seems maybe the VE Map is a distraction to the PCB background? One idea I had, was to have the PCB traces spell out Gearhead - EFI, but then again most PCB's don't have curved traces.

dave w

woody80z28
10-18-2012, 04:29 AM
I thought about that too...but 45*s are as close as PCBs get to curves. I also tried one with gearhead spelled out in binary code blocks but didnt like that either.

woody80z28
10-26-2012, 05:11 AM
Ok, here's what I think can be the final logo.

I used the new logotype with the old circuit board styling and optimized the fade at the edges. I also used the spark table from the supplied BIN. Should be good to just resize and plug in at the top.

What do you guys think? Let me know if you like it and I can send the original via email along with a vector logotype if you want to cut stickers or anything.

1project2many
10-26-2012, 05:44 AM
