View Full Version : Looking for Help!!! SBC TBI Cant get over 2300 RPM

Hoping a lot more knowledgeable than me can look this file over and see if anything stands out. I am very mechanically inclined but this is my first rebuild with almost zero help other than what i could find on youtube and forums. Please let me know any specific info that could be helpful thanks in advance.

Background.
1991 Chevy K5 Blazer SBC 5.7l
engine was rebuilt and bored .030 over and converted to hydraulic roller
has new heads from summit
new distributor
new temp sensor
new map sensor
new alternator
new plugs
new plug cables
new fuel pump - tested ok with rented fuel pressure gauge from parts store - replaced all rubber lines to fuel pump
new icm - have back up just incase both checked out good at the parts store
etc...

The issue i have is when get over a certain RPM is starts to misfire and "bog out" around 2275 rpm

Wiring has been checked and re checked
I did pull timing connector to verify timing and i believe that set the code 42 error code or it came on when I hit 2275 rpms not entirely sure. The test I did previous did the same thing as far as bogging out or miss firing but did not throw a code.
I have fought this issue for a while finally found tuner pro to try to better understand whats going on only im not entirely sure how to read all the data. I can tell that my BLM is low not around the 128 it should be but not sure if thats related to my issue with the bogging down.

The data log is showing two Errors Code 42 and Low Battery Voltage.

The Code 42 happened about 2/3 of the way thru the data log. The Low Battery Voltage happened near the end of the data log.

Attached is a Modified ARJU 91 C-G-K-R-V Truck 5.7TBI 700r4 california.bin with the BPW and SA patches applied. Possibly you have the ability to reprogram the chip with the attached .bin file?

The BPW and SA patches are very helpful to see what the fuel and spark are doing at the moment Code 42 is set. The low battery voltage might be due the way the computer is wired to battery +, not sure. Low battery voltage is an unusual error to see in a data log.

Yes, in the thread I mentioned that I unplugged the timing connector to verify base timing was at 0, Im pretty sure thats what thru the ignition control circuit code and the low battery was because I turned the key off before stopping the data log. I will try the bin file you attached and do a another data log and this time I will stop the log before turning the key off. Thanks for the reply.

Looking at the Bin file you sent I cant see any difference from the one I was using. I believe the Bin file I was using had Spark advance and BPW can you please explain where I can can see the difference. thanks for the help!

With the Patch applied, SA will be in the DataStream. Without the Patch, valuable SA data is missing. Below is a SA sample (4.3 V6).

Got it... thanks and sorry Im really new to this software.... my knowledge of what is supposed to be what is extremely limited but you got to start somewhere so thanks again for the help
I was finally able to do another test with the modified BIN, this time I started the data log before I started the engine, it seemed to run fine until it entered closed loops status and then the INT and BLM start to fluctuate and then it started running rough. Please let me know what you think could be goin on. thanks!

Sorry Im not entirely sure what you mean, I havent reprogrammed anything as far I know. Do I need to reprogram the chip? Are you referring the prom?

Oh, some miscommunications on my part.

The EPROM will need to be reprogramed with the modified .bin file for the "Patch" to work.

The tread is several years old, and some of the EPROM programming options are not available now.

The 1227747 typically uses a 2732a EPROM. Perhaps the products listed on Amazon (link below) are an option?

what is fuel pressure? can you test fuel pressure while it is misfiring? I usually get a long line and run it under the windshield wiper or the mirror so it is not in the cab. i would also check with basic stuff like firing order and timing. easy to put a plug wire in the wrong place or crack a spark plug when tightening. I also do not reuse a spark plug if i drop it on the ground....

ALSO, what cylinder heads did you get from summit? ot sounds like a custom chip will be required.

Dave, I will purchase both of those items and re write the chip with the modifed bin. I recently found out I was running the incorrect spark plugs and will definitely need a performance chip or to rewrite my current one to match the upgrades to the engine. I was told by the machine shop my upgrades would not affect my ECM clearly they were not correct. Brian for harristuning.com was a big help and quickly determined the issue with my spark plugs and did not seem happy that I was running the factory chip with the modifications to the engine as its for a 180hp engine not a 300hp engine.

Tayto, I have not checked fuel pressure while driving by key on engine off it was about 13psi. I have checked the firing order several times and rechecked some more, i have not dropped any plugs on the ground but i am running the wrong plugs for the aluminum heads. Which could have potentially hurt them so Im told, Im hoping this is not the case and they were not cheap. I am definitely looking into performance chips do you have any recommendation?

Dave, I received the chip eraser and writer yesterday and did a test with the re written chip with the file you sent. I also swapped the spark plugs with the recommended set. It seemed to run a heck of a lot better and I was able to get up to around 55mph but didnt feel safe taking if on the freeway(brakes are sketchy at best currently), the more it ran is seemed to run a little rougher. Here is the file please let me know what you think. If I need a custom tune file are you able to provide that or do you know someone that could I would obviously pay for that service but im told not many people are able to do so.

Good Job getting the chip erased and reprogrammed. :thumbsup: The data log has both Spark Advance and Base Pulse Width data. :thumbsup::thumbsup:

BLM history shows lean at upper RPMs, and rich at lower RPM's. O2 Sensor data looks mostly normal. Spark Advance averages are shown, with minimal knock counts.

Custom tuning is required for optimal performance.

Dave I have broken a leg off of the 2732a chip, I ordered a replacement but was unable to write my file to the new chip. After searching the forums Ive found some threads on adapting a ZIF socket to the ecm and using a 27SF512 EEPROM. Can you point me in the direction of where I might be able to find some of these details on using a 27SF512 EEPROM in the 7747. " I'm going to skip over a mountain of details about using a 27SF512 Flash Chip in a '7747 ECM"

The 27SF512 is a 64K chip. The original 1227747 chip is 4K. An offset is needed to use the 27SF512 chip in a 1227747. There are several ways to think about an offset, I like the thinking that only the bottom 4K of the 27SF512 is programmed for the 1227747. My following comment is oversimplified, the ZIF Socket is modified for the 27SF512 to "work like" a 4K chip.

Using Offsets on Chips



How to use offsets when programming chips:
If the chip you are programming is of a larger capacity than the binary file you are putting on it, you typically need to use an offset with
respect to chip addressing. This option is shown in the TunerPro RT program under 'Moates Prom I/O'. To program a chip, proceed as follows:

1) Ensure that all programs on the PC are closed, and then connect the AutoProm or Flash & Burn unit. If using a serial version of the AutoProm,
connect its power supply. Make sure, if using an AutoProm, that it is disconnected from the car's ECM.

2) Once the unit is connected, start up the TunerPro RT program. You should see at the bottom of the window a message like "Connected: AutoProm 2.5.A" or something similar. If this is not shown, and you instead see "Hardware Not Found", then one of the following needs to be checked:
a) Driver installation. If using a USB product, the proper driver needs to be installed and configured correctly. Check website for detailed
instructions in this regard.
b) Switch position. If using an AutoProm, there is a switch on the back (black horizontal) of the unit which needs to be placed in the 'toward the
middle of the unit' position. If it is in the 'toward the outside' position, then the chip burning and emulation functions will not work.

3) Assuming that (2) is achieved successfully, you are now ready to put a chip in the unit. Place the chip such that the chip notch or arrow is
oriented in the same direction as the ZIF socket handle, which should be toward the cable connections. Also, make sure that the chip is positioned
away from the ZIF handle, so that the empty holes in the socket are present at the handle end. The orientation and positioning of the chip in the
socket is CRITICAL, so make sure that this is correct. See pictures on website for clarity.

4) Under the 'Tools' menu item, select the 'Moates Prom I/O' option, and you will get a submenu. In here, you should do the following in the correct
order:
a) Select the type of chip you'll be programming from the drop-down menu. This will likely be either the AT29C256 or the 27SF512.
b) Pick the 'Load file to buffer' option, and navigate to find the file you want programmed on the chip. Select it, and it will be loaded to
memory on the PC.
c) Take note of the file size indicated in the message window. It will likely be one of four sizes: 4k, 16k, 32k, or 64k (kbytes).
d) Take a look at the top right part of the window, and you'll see the offset values. This is what we'll do next.

5) The file size, along with the chip size, will determine what offsets you need to use. When you change the offset values, you will notice that other
values will change automatically. Just make sure that the correct values are filled in for all four boxes before programming the chip. The following
table summarizes what offsets you need to use depending on chip used and file size:

As you can see, the buffer (or file content) will be placed at the 'end' of the chip.

6) Once you have selected the proper chip, the proper file to use for the program content, and the proper offsets, you are ready to program the chip.
If using a 27SF512 chip, you must 'Erase Chip' first. This is not needed with the AT29C256. Go ahead and select the 'Program Chip' option. Follow
this action with a 'Verify' command to make sure everything programmed correctly. You should get a 'Success' notice.

I dont intend to stick with the uv erasable chips but since I just purchased the uv eraser and GQ 4x4 programmer a month or so ago I figured Id give one more shot on a 2732. Looking in the GQ 4x4 software I dont see the 27SF512 which means Im sure I will need to buy another chip burner which I have not figured out yet and Moates website is not longer available.

Ohh well on that front I have seen people talking about a new site that made a burner that is 100% compatible with most software(tunerpro rt, etc) (and comes with its own), it was over on boostednw.com 27SF512 is definitely on the list cause they mainly deal with Honda stuff and those chips are the main thing they use, its also said they can erase "fake" sst chips which in theory are just bad "clones" of the originals, but still work 100% fine if the burner supports writing/erasing them

I am waiting on my burner hopefully to ship from them this week

Well fortunately for me I purchased the GQ 4x4 on amazon so I will likely just return it and get the boosted burner, hopefully the line isnt too long.

Oh thats good you can return it if your still within the return period then, I would definitely opt for a purpose built burner vs a generic eeprom burner

Well they said they are in it for the long haul and the more interest lets them develop more of these items that are "missing" from the market asap

I'm feeling like history of chips would be helpful.

PROM - Program Read Only Memory one time only, once it's programmed that's it.

EPROM - Erasable Program Read Only Memory, using Ultraviolet Light.

EEPROM - Electronically Erasable Program Read Only Memory, or Flash Chips.

Chip Programmers are like many other tools in the toolbox, most likely the more features and benefits a tool has the more the tool will cost.

I decided to go "All IN" for an OBD1 chip programmer and purchased the Batronix BX32P https://www.newark.com/batronix/bx32p-barlino/programmer-bx32p-barlino-ii/dp/53M6869

I have a GQ 4x4, it definitely does the eeprom 27sf512. I have LOTS of programmers including the Burn2, The GQ 4x4 is my go-to "on the road" programmer now, luv it.

edit: My GQ 4x4 has never had an issue with 21v 2732a's either AND no external power. Straight USB connection. If you already have it, no reason to send it back. I think you will love it.

Price... the burn2 was relatively cheap at ~$80 and I think the GQ was around $120, didn't care, I was tired of my parallel port programmers(Data I/O, Pocket Programmers, etc etc) and the big bad ass usb one I had at the time to do BGA's(and just about anything) was cumbersome. I bought a Burn2 specifically to work with some Ford stuff I got from Moates.

T48 [TL866-3G] Programmer (Ebay) will program just about any EPROM from 2708, 2716, 2732 (24pin), and 2764 through 27512 (28 pin) at any programing voltage up to 25V (Most of the older EPROMs use 21V). This and the Batronix are super options.

What’s fully made in the USA anymore and who really cares . These suggested burners do more than the 27sf512 and are less money or the Batronix is equivalent cost. To do Aton more chips than a sst that’s definitely a better option.

Nothing, but at least the devices themselves are US, and have support. Good luck getting the same from some mass produced. This burner does more than the 27sf512, does all the same chips the moates one did and more... please tell me what other chips are needed to be read/burnt for your GM?

Because it seems if your just talking about the fact it can write 4535043634 other chips your a little off topic as there are only a select few that need to be compatible for our GM Cars

Flash chips just seem a lot less of a hassle, especially for newcomers that are trying to start from zero, less barrier to entry, its like suggesting that someone new to computers go out and try to buy a APPLE II from the 90's and learn and use that, before they touch and learn any other computer.

Even tunercat.com advises against using original EPROMs

Just do whatever you want. I like having the ability to do ALL of it, shite, I have adapters to even do MB BGA's to 24 pin if I wanted to. And yes, the ability to program the stock memcal's without an adapter, like others, is invaluable. :rockon:

Also, yes the 2732's can be a pain. You can read any of them easily...for programming, start at 12v, no go, go to 21v, and then to 24v till it verifies. Not an issue if you have equipment.

I don't think the spray and pray method is the greatest idea when dealing with electronics and voltages. I prefer facts and ease of use. The 2732's are a difficult PROM to burn. They were developed before the JDEC specifications were put together.
The bad they’re not identifiable off numbers on the chip. The Batronix does well with chip id feature. A lot of the old tbi chips program
as a nm27c32b.

Could be. But with discussions about programming cars from the early '80s still happening, this really is the car equivalent to the Apple II forum. Folks here are using old tech already. Some of us learned to use the tech when it was new. Some of us live in places where old tech is more available and more affordable than than new. Maybe, for some of us, having tools that provide more options vs more convenience is desirable.

In many cases I agree. It can be very frustrating to find that you have to source a bunch of different parts and tools when you're dabbling in a complex world like chip burning. And for someone asking "Which burner would you recommend" I would think a simple answer that supports readily available chips is a great suggestion. But ask yourself, is this a general recommendation thread, or a thread involving someone who has already purchased hardware? Is the current discussion helping the OP determine whether or not the product he's purchased can burn the chips that are available to him? One of the folks here who has the same product says "Definitely yes." Is there any need to continue?
