View Full Version : MPFI on an old IH engine

My sone just got a 1210 4x4 IH pichup with utility bed for his tow rig, he has a rock crawler we have been building, running and improving since he was 14, now 17.

so there is an aluminum intake available for the IH with spots for MPFI injectors but it's very pricy and does not give much in the way of performance gains. So I will be using a stock metal intake and have my machinist do the injector ports and fuel rails.

My question for you guys is ECM choice? Which way to go. I have plenty of room inside cab behind dash so it does not have to be an underhood ECM, but could be!

So what would you guys use for an ECM?

well, i prefer ECMs that i understand, but from the sounds of it, you're going MPFI with it?

grab you a 16149396 from a 91-93 W-body w/3.4 or a 93-94 3.1(not 3100) W-body. then you can use all of the little enhancements of my nAst1 project...

i need to post a thread for that now that i think about it...

I'm pretty sure I am going to bypass TBI and go straight to MPFI during the rebuild of this engine. Not much experiance with MPFI ECM except the 1227727 TPI type and I know there's a better option.

So the 16149396 a C4? Underhood? Got tons of room underhood and behind dash so either way is not a concern.

well, the 16149396 is an upgraded version of the 1227727, even looks identical from the outside. it is underhood capable since it's weatherproofed, but you could stick it in the cabin if you desired. i prefer underhood myself, since it is generally easier to get at, but there is no wrong location for this one.

The 1227727 or is it 1227730 is an underhood. But your saying the 16149396 is upgraded? Like newer, faster, better and has good defs and hacks?

If so I will start looking for one...

a 1227727 is an underhood ECM, the 16149396 is basically a 1227727, except with double the RAM. same 2.1MHz processor, but now with twice the working area!

doesn't mean much though(unless you do custom coding), other than most of them are slightly newer than any of the 1227727s you'll find.

So I will obviously be doing custom coding! :jfj:

Any problems making these run a V8?

Aren't they all V6 ECMs? :scare:

until you get into the SFI ECMs, no GM OBD1 ECM has ever been cylinder count specific, not to mention the 1227727 was used on L98 corvettes, it's all in the MEMCAL.

yes, LH and the knock filter are integrated into the MEMCAL in every 7730/7727 application i can think of.

you can either modify a V6/L4 MEMCAL or just use a V8 one, depending on your needs, since cylinder count is stored in the NETRES for both limp home operation and for one of the DTCs as well. it's a simple resistor mod, been posted on TGO a few times before.

when deciding what MEMCAL to use, get one that is intended for an engine that has the closest possible bore size as what you're running(since knock frequency is determined by bore size), and if possible, match the valvtrain as well(OHV or OHC, roller or flat-tappet, etc).

I guess I'll have to look up the resister method because the only 1227727 underhood type ECM is very rare if my searches are coorect? They only came in a few year Corvettes.

On the other hand the underhood type came in a bazillion V6 cars...

nearly any MEMCAL can be plugged into a 7727 style ECM and work correctly, regardless of what the MEMCAL originally came from. there are exceptions, but as long as it will plug in, it should function normally, so feel free to look for one from a 93 4.3 half ton truck, if it seems like the closest match.

and the 7727 was ONLY ever used in corvettes and W-bodies, but SO many W's were made, it's hard not to find them.

the 7730 however, went in nearly everything that had a 60V6 that wasn't a W-body, and the 90-92 F-bodies with the TPI motors as well.

Not for nothing, but for simplicity, I would use a Ford EEC-4 system from a 351, it is already tuned for the high weight truck.
Dave and I are working on a tune right now for my Suburban with TPI, but it may be a while before its complete, as I don`t have a laptop... I usually have to borrow one for my data logging.
That being said, if you go with a `730 $8D, AUJP is a good start. I just recently loaded the SA tables from an LT1 caprice, and I have no pinging whatsoever on 87 octane fuel.

Makes sense but I know nothing about ford stuff and have all GM equptment I need. May be going the crank wheel Dave W is making? Then coil on plug if I go that far? Maybe? the Caddilac has a dual pickup distributor I may hybrid like the other ones I've done. Just not sure yet.

I started out doing Ford swaps...They are just as simple as TPI, plug N` play.
They are sequential and don`t require a crank trigger.

That's good to know! You could probably help out the Ford section.

My other issue, although a true Gear Head to begin with and like anything cool, is Chevy has always been my favorite. Back to high school and my 67 Nova SBC... then I found a soft spot in my heart for IH About 15 years ago. Mostly Scouts but this engine build is for my sons tow rig.

I grew up in Ford vehicles, and started turning wrenches when I was 10, on off road (VORRA) racing dune buggies that my friends uncle built. We got tired of doing the same old stuff boys did, and he caught wind of that, and put us to work!
My dream is to build a strong, efficient 292 I6 with SEFI, that will be able to run my Suburban.

I've got a 258 bottom end with a 4.0L HO head and the 2006 Tuned Port MPFI intake to put a six cylinder together for my Scout II. :wtg:
