The 1997 LT1 is OBD2.

EEHack is for the 1994 - 1995 LT1, which is OBD1.

'96 & '97 OBD2 LT1 is one of the redheaded bastard stepchildren of the GM tuning world.
If you can legally get away with converting to OBD1 LT1 (16188051), do so.

That explains a few things.

What do I use for data logging?

I use the usb SX version for all my weird stuff cuz I'm a cord kinda guy, for obd2 stuff that I don't already have. It's cheap and universal.

There is always Tunercat OBD2 if you can find someone selling one. Or if you are a baller it is still available through Moates but you have to buy a Roadrunner PCM too. I guess I should mention Jet Dynamic Spectrum Tuner which is the red headed stepchild of Tunercat OBD2 with no support so I hear.

Shoot, does JET even sell it anymore? Man it sucks John(TC) is contractually involved with Bryant(Owner/President JET) nowadays. Bryant is a good dude, maybe call him at JET and see if you can buy some current stuff for tuning. You asked about watching data and that link I posted is a pretty good software piece at a good price thru amazon or ebay.

there are definitely a few dataloggers for obd-2 out there, but i haven't really found a good one myself. you can use tunerpro for logging with ELM but i hear it's pretty bad. i do plan to write an obd-ii datalogger one when i have spare time, but by then everyone will be driving electric flying fusion cars that use obd-24 so i wont have any users

It's available at Summit for $400. Probably other places too.

You've gotta be kidding me. $400 and it can't log data? For real? All it does is download/edit/flash BINs?

I get that the 96/97 LTx PCM is a one-off and all but it sucks there's no FOSS alternative to JET.

Tunercat OBD2 didn't datalog either. JET DST is basically TC OBD2 with different vehicle licensing and support.

Specifically:
"TunerCat OBD2 Tuner is a software package that allows tuning of 96-current GM vehicles. For some early 96-97 vehicles, it is often the only solution. TunerCat OBD2 Tuner must be purchased with our RoadRunner hardware (either with a complete RoadRunner ECM or just a RoadRunner Guts kit) due to licensing restrictions."

Is buying TunerCAT OBD2 from Moates no longer a viable option? (If not, then why is this link still active?)

That said, steveo has provided several tools which make the OBD1 conversion VERY appealing.

Hello,
To me it's a mess what has happened in the aftermarket for tuning early obd2 stuff, especially the LT and "black boxes" vortec sbc and bbc stuff. Back in the day we used to do alot of 94-95 swaps into the obd2 cars, it's not the right way now that we know. :(

Then again, there's always the 12200411 …

The OBDLink SX and software is what I used when I needed a turnkey datalogger for my 96 9C1. The software is included via download and logs the same basic PIDs as shown on a scan tool. Was basically plug and play on my Windows 10 laptop. Here is the link to the sofware page:

Just sharing my experience, hope it helps.
